Bludau, City Manager 949.644 -3000, hbludau @city.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: MAYOR'S APPOINTMENT TO THE 111 MEMORIAL COMMITTEE ISSUE: Does the Council approve the Mayor's appointment to the 1/1 Memorial Committee? RECOMMENDATION: Confirm the Mayor's appointment of to the 1/1 Memorial Committee. BACKGROUND: Council Member Keith Curry suggested the City Council form a committee to recommend an appropriate way to honor the eleven (11) Marines from the First Battalion, First Marines (1/1) who lost their lives in their recent deployment to Iraq. This item was discussed at Council twice, and on May 9th, the City Council approved the concept of forming a committee "to review the overall concept (of honoring military members who lost their lives in the service of their country) and recommend how the fallen Marines (from the 1/1) can best be honored. A resolution was approved at the July 11th meeting establishing the committee with the following make up: one (1) Council member; (2) two members from the 1/1 Committee; one (1) member of the American Legion Post 291; one (1) Arts Commissioner; one (1) member from PB &R and one (1) City, staff member, for a, committee of seven members. Requests have been made to all groups asking for their selections, and several have already been received. We expect the Committee to have its first meeting within the next 30 days. Since the Mayor has one appointment to the Committee, this is the opportunity to make that appointment and have the City Council ratify it. Submitted by: omer L. Bludau City Manager
