CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT TO: MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Recreation & Senior Services Department Wes Morgan, Director — 644 -3157 — wmorgan@city.newport- beach.ca.us - SUBJECT: Purchase of Playground Equipment at Mariners Park That City Council approve the purchase of Landscape Structures Play Equipment in the amount of $56,651.83 (Attachment A) which will be funded through the State of California 2002 Resource Bond Act. BACKGROUND The Mariners Park playground equipment was installed in 1987, making it the second oldest in the City and past the 15 year life expectancy. The 2001 Park and Recreation Facilities Assessment noted the following regarding the play equipment at Mariners Park: • The accessible composite play structure does not have handrails at the transfer station. There are not the necessary ground level components to allow these structures to meet current ADA requirements • The composite play structure has equipment that is not appropriate for children under five years old. The Mariners Park playground is one of the busiest in the City because of its proximity to Mariners Elementary School, the Mariners Library and the surrounding residential neighborhood. The new equipment would address the ADA requirements and the separation of age appropriate activities for 2 -5 and 5 -12 year olds and would increase the number of play opportunities at the busy park. Three designs for the park were presented at a public community meeting in the spring of 2006 resulting in the selection of the Landscape Structures Play Equipment (Attachment B). The existing swings and Sea Lion will remain as part of the play area. Prepared b Prepared. 9 "= Sean Levin, F7e re ion Manager Wes Morgan, RecreatioO Senior Services Attachments: A.
