HomeMy WebLinkAbout16 - Police Service DogCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 16 January 8, 2008 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Police Department John Klein, Chief of Police, 949 644 3701, jklein @nbpd.org Dale Johnson, Lieutenant, 949 644 3660, djohnson @nbpd.org SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF FUNDS AND AUTHORIZATION TO PURCHASE A POLICE SERVICE DOG (PSD) RECOMMENDATION: Approve acceptance of a restricted public donation in the amount of $15,000 into the Police Donations Account #020 -22571 and increase revenue estimates by this amount. 2. Authorize an appropriation of $15,000 to Patrol Equipment, NOC Account #1830 -8211 and approve the expenditure of funds to purchase one Police Service Dog (PSD) from Adlerhorst International. DISCUSSION: The Police. Department was approached by members of the Newport Harbor Elks Lodge #1767, who indicated interest in making a restricted public donation to assist the Department in purchasing a Police Service Dog. The Police Service Dog not only assists officers in the detection and apprehension of suspects, but also assists in the locating of evidence and illegal narcotics. The Police Service Dog is also utilized by the Department as a public relations tool at the annual Open House, as well as public appearances at local events and recruiting fairs. The Newport Harbor Elks Lodge was advised that the overall cost to purchase and train the PSD and handler would be $15,000. The Newport Harbor Elks Lodge membership ultimately voted in favor of donating the entire $15,000 amount. Police Service Dog January 8, 2008 Page 2 The Police Department currently contracts with Adlerhorst International as their sole vendor for the purchase of Department Patrol Service Dogs, as well as the handler training. Therefore, there were no other bids for this proposed purchase. It should be noted that the $15,000 cost would include the purchase of the canine, the 240 -hour Basic Handler Course, and the 200 -hour Narcotic Detection Course. Environmental Review: None.
