SUBJECT: Amendment to the Newport Beach Municipal Code, Title 9, Fire Code
RECOMMENDATION:
Staff is requesting a continuance on any action for this amendment for the purpose of
studying the effects of potential erosion in relation to the implementation of the new
amendment.
DISCUSSION:
After the first reading of the proposed amendment to the Council, several members
expressed concern with the potential for possible erosion within the 100' hazard
reduction zone as trees, shrubs and groundcover are removed or replaced in
compliance with the new amendment. Fire Department staff was directed to evaluate
and coordinate our efforts in collaboration with the Public Works Department work on
the Buck Gully Erosion Prevention Project in lower Buck Gully.
Staff was further directed to look at all possible solutions and remedies as it pertained to
erosion behind the homes in lower Buck Gully and to potentially retain the services of a
professional as it relates to slope stabilization. At the time we have adequate
information on this issue we would come back to Council with our recommendation for
your consideration.
