The building is being designed for a minimum certified Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating. The Center's goal is to keep seniors ageless, healthy and full of energy. In order to better meet those needs now and the decades ahead, OASIS is embarking upon a journey of renovation and renewal. Friends of OASIS. a non -profit organization dedicated to supporting the senior community, is teaming up with the City of Newport Beach and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian to expand the OASIS Senior Center in Corona del Mar and construct a truly state -of- the -art senior center. To complement the City's investment, the partners have launched a $4.5 million capital campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to build the new OASIS. The Journey Begins Around 1975, a group of senior Newport Beach residents formed a committee to study the needs of seniors and make recommendations to the City Council regarding programs and services. The committee suggested that the City establish a senior center, which the Council accepted. Using federal Human and Urban Development grants and Older American Act funds, along with the existing Carden Hall School lease revenue, the City of Newport Beach opened the doors to the OASIS (Older Adult Social and Information Services) Senior Center in August 1977. Today, the OASIS Senior Center remains dedicated to meeting the needs of all seniors and their families. Many clubs, classes, services, and events are offered, aimed at helping older adults live an enriched, active and independent life. I feel young again.' operated by the City of Newport Beach and is staffed by a corps of professionals and volunteers who are responsible for planning classes and activities, working with seniors in developing new and exciting programs, providing support services and counseling, and helping family members concerned about thew parents. As people age, isolation and lack of purpose contribute to depression and poor physical health. Opportunities for socialization, fitness and support are critical to maintaining a good quality of life. The City of Newport Beach is taking proactive measures to make life better for older adults and those who care for them. As the aging population grows, the OASIS Building Project becomes ever more crucial to the community. A Welcoming Environment OASIS provides the social interaction, programs and services seniors desperately need to keep their sense of security, belonging and purpose. The programs at OASIS enrich the lives of so many and provide some of the best senior services in the nation. Always bustling with activity, nearly 9,000 seniors participate in one or more monthly activities at the Center. These figures reflect only those seniors that sign the activity register sheets! There are manv more seniors who drop by to obtain information, shop at the gift store, or just stop by to chat. "OASIS is a socialization center with a welcoming environment for seniors to meet and mingle," states Celeste Jardine- Haug, OASIS Center director. The Center provides a range of programs serving seniors including. Outreach — Provides seniors with legal assistance, health insurance counseling and advocacy; information and referral services; senior assessment counseling service; telephone reassurance with friendly telephone calls made daily to seniors who live alone; and the use of medical equipment including wheelchairs, walkers and shower seats. Health and Wellness — Seniors can enjoy a range of classes including aerobics, balance, yoga, and chair exercises to keep fir, receive monthly health assessments and blood pressure screenings; and become educated on medical documentation and UCI lecture series covering a wide array of health issues. Transportation — Offers affordable ride -share transportation for medical appointments, shopping trips, errands, social engagements, and OASIS activities. • Travel — Invites seniors to participate on day trips to Broadway productions, museums, garden tours and more. For the more adventurous, extended trips to visit Marta Becket's Opera House, a dinner at the Space Needle, or a Shrimp Boat Cruise on the Mississippi are just a few examples. • Meal Programs — A daily lunch program is offered with hot and cold meals formulated by a Registered Dietician. In addition, Meals - on- Wheels is provided by the South County Senior Services for seniors unable to obtain adequate meals. • Classes — Seniors can choose from over 40 classes in fine arts, foreign language, computer, fitness, educational and enrichment, and music and dancing. • Support Group and Services — A range of support is available from tax assistance to living alone. Support is available for any situation. • Special Interest Groups and Social Groups— Seniors can enjoy tennis, Texas Hold -Em, and Bridge or join the sailing, garden or computer club. Many groups and clubs are available to foster companionship. The Center's services help older adults enjoy an active and purpose -driven life. This is the time of life where the frenzy of daily activity and office deadlines minimize and the day becomes filled with leisurely activities. An Urgent Need The current facilities simply do not meet the needs of the Center's quality programs. The existing building is over 50 years old and was originally an elementary school not adequately designed to support programs and services for seniors. Many of the buildings are outdated, unsafe, and not up to code. The buildings cannot support the modern needs for technology; 0 Plumbing, flooring, roofing, window and other facility problems continue to drain finances and time; :D Room space is not available to support additional unique and needed senior programs; Z Parking is inadequate and overcrowded, and access to the facilities is difficult for many seniors. Moving Forward A new senior center, designed to accommodate the special physical requirements of seniors, is needed The OASIS Building Project includes a plan for a new OASIS with 12,000 additional square feet. The existing building will be demolished, making space for a campus of individual buildings organized around a central courtyard with useable space for leisure, exercise and socialization. ► The new OASIS will include 36,409 square feet divided into distinct wings housing educational classrooms, art programs, health and fitness activities, social and assembly functions, and administrative offices. The new Center will include a library, computer lab, two health- screening rooms, an art center, and a multipurpose room. ► The multipurpose room will be large enough to hold 500 people, theater style, when opened completely and designed to divide into three sections for multi-use programs. ► A dedicated exercise room will allow classes to take place all day, rather than be interrupted by other activities that shared the same space. ► A wellness center, complete with lockers for men and women, will be furnished with appropriate strengthening and cardiovascular equipment. A professional staff member will be supervising this area at all times. / Parking on site will increase by 60 cars, and handicap ramps will be in place ensuring easy access to the facilities. / All classrooms will be equipped with technology, enabling the Center to advance into the future. The lunch area will have its own dedicated space allowing for additional meal programs and cooking activities. Now is the time to do this project. All the partners are aligned —the City Council, Hoag Hospital and Friends of OASIS. Because of the urgency for a new Center, the City Council has fast- tracked the development of final design plans and is trying to shorten the construction period to complete the project by early 2010. The total project cost is estimated to be $20.1 million. This investment will provide a first -class campus for a lifetime of health and learning for the next three generations of seniors allowing the Center to have the flexibility and capability of keeping up with emerging needs. "Current plans are for the City to directly pay one -half of the cost or about $10 million. The balance will come from a $5.6 million challenge grant, funded with park in lieu fees. These funds will be matched dollar for dollar with private, tax - deductible contributions from other businesses and residents. Accordingly, approximately one- half of the cost of the expansion will be funded with contributed funds, rather than tax revenues," states Councilman Keith Curry. To meet the $5.6 million challenge and achieve the ultimate goal of $20.1 million, OASIS has launched a capital campaign to raise $4.5 million. The generous support of community residents, businesses and local foundations will be requested to help the OASIS Senior Center continue its dedication of ensuring the health and well being of seniors in the community.
