SUBJECT: BUDGET AMENDMENT TO ACCEPT A CHECK FROM THE FRIENDS
OF THE NEWPORT BEACH LIBRARY AND APPROPRIATE FUNDS TO
MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS BUDGET ACCOUNTS FOR FY
2010/11.
ISSUE:
Library staff requests approval of a budget amendment to accept a check from the
Friends of the Library to improve Library Services and Programs.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve a Budget Amendment to increase revenue estimates by $240,800 in Account
No. 4091 -5892 (Friends of the Library Donations), and increase expenditure estimates
by the same amount in Divisions 4091.
DISCUSSION:
A check from the Friends of the Newport Beach Public Library for a total amount of
$240,800 was approved by the Library Board of Trustees on September 21, 2010. A
facsimile of the original check will be presented to City Council on September 28, 2010.
The check is intended to fund the collection and programs on the Library's Wish List for
FY 2010/2011.
The Friends see their mission as enhancing the excellent services the City already
supports. More than three - fourths of this gift money will support the adult, young adult
and children's collection at all library sites. The collection will be augmented with new
bestsellers and high demand titles, current popular audio books, graphic novels, music
CDs, young adult books, children's books, and children's DVDs /audio books /kits .
A generous portion of the gift will be used to support a variety of programming including
the Library's Summer Reading Program. Research has demonstrated that participation
in library reading programs during the summer can make as much as a year's difference
in reading levels when students return to school.
Weekend, week -long, and year -round programs such as Imagination Celebration,
National Library Week, Musicales and Family Concerts, the Corona del Mar Christmas
Walk, Programs at Balboa Branch Library, Children's Author Series, Children's general
programming and the Library's Literacy program are each significantly supported by the
Friends donation.
The Friends donation underwrites outreach to teens and the community schools.
Classrooms of first and fourth graders travel via bus to the Library for orientation to the
Library and its resources and receive a gift book. Librarians visit the middle and high
school students on their campuses. It is particularly valuable for students who are
unaware of the depth and variety of our online resources.
FUNDING AVAILABILITY:
With the approval of the recommended Budget Amendment, the entire donation will be
used to improve Library Services in the expenditure accounts as indicated below.
