I have always volunteered my time, as well as my resources, to charitable endeavors in our community. I am also a life -long avid reader. And I love libraries. Now that our children are no longer at home full time, I have the opportunity to focus on a new commitment. While I have enjoyed the time I have spent (and continue to spend) on charitable causes, at this time I would like to become involved in civic matters. We are fortunate to live in a spectacular location, but the reason the City is a special place is because enough of its residents feel a sense of duty to make sure that it retains the qualities that make it special. The Library system is an amenity that enriches the lives of our residents and I would like to do my part to ensure that the quality of the system continues. I believe that my background will allow me to quickly get up to speed on the issues facing the Library system and if appointed, I am willing to work hard to do myjob in a professional fashion as the City Council has a right to expect. I would have no agenda other than having the Library system be as good as it can be. I certify that all statements made on this application are true and correct to the best of my knowledge. My love affair with books and libraries began at an early age and has never dimmed. As a child I joined Summer programs, reviewing children's books for the library. On vacations I enjoy visiting libraries in new cities. One of the first things I did when I moved to NB was to obtain a library card. The scope and quality of programs offerred is so impressive that I joined the NBPLF to lend financial support. The library bookstore called out to me and I began volunteering there three years ago, working at least two afternoons a month. Time spent there is a joy and has given me the opportunity to learn more about our library system and how much it contributes to the NB community. I believe my FOL bookstore involvement and experience on various boards, along with my desire to contribute to the library as a trustee, qualifies me for a Board of Library Trustee position. Libraries have been a wonderful source of knowledge and entertainment for me for over many decades. It is time for me to dedicate significant time to the future of our wonderful library. Library - As a former librarian„ I am aware of the budget constraints experienced by libraries during times of recession. The City Library is well run and has a great deal of community support, through both Friends of the Library Bookstore and the Foundation. I would support the continuation and growth of these groups, who provide the finances necessary for the Library to run smoothly, no matter the situation in the business world. I would encourage community members to become aware of the many services available through the library. Parks - As a resident of the City for many years and a current member of EQAC, I am aware of the need to provide open space in the city, for both active and passive recreation. Updated on 5 -22 -09 1. David Stotts 2. Gary Almas E I first learned about the Newport Beach City Arts Commission after meeting Ms. Jana Barbier while applying to exhibit my art at the Central Library. Because I was more focused on promoting my career as a painter at that time, I didn't take the time to learn about the Commission's function. Over the last 3 years of exhibiting my art in Newport Beach at the Central Library, City Hall, Centennial Celebration, and Celebrate Art OC, among other events, I became increasingly aware of the Commission's responsibilities and became acquainted with its members. After my involvement in the Imagination Celebration as a teacher /coach volunteer working with children, and receiving an invitation to make a presentation to the Commission, I began to consider the idea of Serving on the Commission. Assisting the Commission appeals to me primarily due to my strong belief in the positive attributes of the arts. 'laving been raised in Vienna, Austria, I possess a unique background and perspective, which I believe will be an asset to the .;ommission. I was exposed to the world of art at an early age through my uncle, Adolf Frohner, a world- renowned artist, and his peers. In addition to being an artist, I have a 20-plus year involvement in the television and entertainment industry, which further qualifies me to serve. These experiences have provided me with, not only a distinctly different viewpoint from most Newport residents, but the ability to motivate people, regardless of socio- economic status, to successfully accomplish any given goal. I would welcome the opportunity to serve on the Commission in order to further its goals and mission. Michael) Mag►utsche J May 8, 2008 Signature Date: Wchaeflo& Contemporary Art Michael) Ma rutsche - artist's background: Michaell Magrutsche was born in Vienna, Austria and grew up surrounded by the art and beauty of Europe. Michaell was exposed to Modern Art at an early age. Growing up in his home with its collection of art by his uncle, the famous Austrian painter, Adolf Frohner, and meeting his uncle's peers (i.e., Wolfgang Hutter, Arik Brauer, Ernst Fuchs, etc.) taught Michaell the power of Abstract. 01 moved to Southern California approximately 20 years ago at the age of 26. After I was unable to locate artwork that appealed to me for my new home in 1994, 1 took up painting and fell in love with the process and the powerful results." Austrian American Artist Michaell has been selected as one of the most interesting artists. Michaell has been selected by Orange Coast Magazine as one of the most interesting up and coming Orange County artists. He is featured in the magazine's September 2006 Arts & Entertainment issue. i Michaell at his last exhibition at Sandstone Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA Michaell Magrutsche's art career began as a struggle to find artwork to hang in his Newport Beach home. "I've always been involved in creative endeavors, but it was the lack of art that appealed to me while decorating my new home that inspired me to begin painting," he says. The native Austrian now has several of his own pieces that he rotates through his home, which is also his working studio. "I need this reflection because it uplifts me and keeps me confident in my ability," he adds. Magrutsche specializes in "liminal abstract art, what he calls the space between abstract and concrete. He credits his uncle the famous Austrian painter Adolf Frohner, with teaching him the power of abstract. He says, "I want the color and design in my art to grab you, engage you and seduce you into getting lost in its content." Dawn Pettit 02006 Orange Coact Magazine being an artist: "As long as I can remember, I have been involved with art in one form or another; from being a disc jockey to producing fashion shows, to producing /directing international television programs, to screenwriting, and finally to creating music and paintings. Art forces me to focus on what is 'more real,' such as beauty and nature. To me, creating art is my job. However, it is primarily a sacred process, which continually gives me a greater insight into who and how I am. My goal as an artist is to bring others a sense of joy and inspiration, similar to that which I experience with this 'soul food' called art." Michael]-& Michaell Magrutsche my inspiration: "I am inspired when something different draws my attention. Not different for different's sake, but different in being creative, or fresh in a new way. Today, when 1 enter a room, I want to feel a painting. I want its color and design to grab me, engage me and seduce me into getting lost in its content. I love to get caught up in the inexplicable power of colors and shapes, which evoke a range of emotions in me. I prefer to paint in the abstract to explore an unknown content without boundaries. In addition, I sometimes place mundane objects into surreal settings because it captures my mind and interest. Like most artists, the question of "What is art ?" was continuously on Michaeli's mind. Michael[ finally arrived at a definition that made the most sense to him. "Art is what inspires," meaning uplifting and upbeat. "I believe I am successful in creating art without catharsis, since my recent pieces were most uplifting even though my wife was battling cancer." Michaell Magrutsche what I would like you to experience: "I would like my art to stimulate the viewer in a way that triggers his or her imagination to fill in the blanks, thereby creating an interaction with the artwork. It should cause a response similar to that of listening to the music of minimalists, such as Miles Davis, where one's mind and soul complete the picture, playing with the unfilled spaces in a myriad of possibilities." why Michaell's art in public spaces and corporate environments: "My art stands on its own. Unlike the typical art in public spaces or corporate environments which tends to blend into the surroundings, my art draws one's attention to the architecture of the space or environment enhancing the interior design. Therefore, my art amplifies the important interplay between the interior design and the architecture. People like the unexpected. My art is unique; it captures the eye with its color and design, enticing one to smile while lifting the spirits. In addition, my art is interactive, inviting one to stop and think, thereby engaging the mind in a positive and uplifting manner. For these reasons, clients and visitors to these public spaces will leave with the indelible impression of the entire design concept. rdlchaell Magru[sch about my art - my three directions: "I try to be as concise as possible in expressing my inspirations. I love colors and find their vibrancy and unusual combinations emotionally most rewarding. What I have learned from renowned artist and collectors is that one's appreciation for a piece of art should in no way be diminished or minimized by one's consideration for where the piece would be displayed. I believe that a work of art must be capable of standing on its own, in which case it fits in -any surrounding." Over the years, Michaeli's work has evolved into three avenues of expression: exploring the liminal: Michaeli's primary inspiration falls into the category, 'The Liminal - The Space In Between Abstract And Concrete.' Typically, viewers are captured by the unique organic shapes and colors of these pieces, resulting in their search for either a concrete or an abstract image. One can often turn the pictures in this group in any direction providing a different abstract (i.e., 'Jumpy,' jumping from abstract to concrete). images from the subconscious: "I have to be in an open frame of mind, typically when I wake up in the middle of the night, to capture the flow of creativity which comes over me. This category consists of ink drawings which I later complete in mixed media." surreal themes - off - shapes 8 colors: "This expression of my artwork, mostly commissioned pieces, is most challenging in balancing attention, naYvete and artistic value. In my 'theme' pictures, I like to bring out the innocence and love of my 'magical child.' I also take pleasure in showing the mysticism of certain scenes intermingled with unfamiliar objects and unusual colors to evoke a mind -soul play." Michaell Magrutsche .A Art In Public Spaces - Transforming Spaces with Art versus Decor By Michael) Ma rutsche ©2007 Corporate image and branding have never been more important than in today's business world. The public spaces of a business are an extension of that company's image. Each time a prospective customer enters your lobby, reception area or corporate conference room, an almost immediate impression of your business is created. Because such first impressions can be so critical to your company's image, the appropriate message must be conveyed. The proper utilization of art can serve as an important tool in enhancing your image and personalizing your public spaces. The art displayed in your business should make a statement that your company is modern, open- minded, and creative. It should create an uplifting effect on the workplace and demonstrate a human touch. This can be accomplished by displaying eye- catching, engaging and bold artwork. Unlike the typical business environment, art can be utilized to express individuality and differentiate you from other companies. In the majority of businesses today, art has been relegated to the same status in the decor as that of a lampshade or the drapes. Your art should attract your visitor's attention, but not be viewed as an extravagant or ego - driven trophy. By emphasizing a bold piece of art, your visitor will receive an enhanced image of you and your company, and they will be more prone to remember your business in a favorable light. Today's method of displaying art in businesses is outdated. Most art is exhibited ineffectively, thereby missing the potential opportunity for image enhancement. Businesses spend millions of dollars establishing a brand and an image, but often ignore the message conveyed by the artwork displayed in their public spaces. Therefore, the value of this important message space is diminished and their art is reduced to the basic function of wall covering. Most corporate decors are bland and leave your visitors with the same vague impression they receive at most other businesses. Since the a% ige person forms an impressic of you and /or your business in approximately two seconds, when a client or customer enters your office, he rates your business conscious and unconscious very quickly. The more attention you devote to your business environment's design scheme, the greater the value of the message communicated about you and your company. Although art is a familiar sight in the workplace, designers generally use it as a mere component in their overall design. Since art is a personal preference, relinquishing control to the interior designer, sacrifices an opportunity to enhance your company's image. Art should be displayed as a focal point of your d6cor and should be selected based on its stimulating, thought - provoking aspects. Art should be capable of standing on its own and it should make the design visible, instead of the design hiding the art. Your art will then be noticed for its own unique qualities and not viewed as an accenting element. Art should serve as more than a diversion from the less pleasant visible aspects of your office, such as computer cables. By displaying bold art, you freshen your office atmosphere. Properly displayed art can shift your guests and employees out of their daily monotony, and offer them a new outlook. You should display thought - provoking art, which can also stimulate creative thinking and initiate conversation. By personalizing your art choices, you demonstrate versatility and an open mind to new ideas. The art you select can be integrated into your company's overall branding /marketing efforts, and should reflect your personal values and ideals. Art can make a creative statement and express your unique point of view. Through your personalization, your visitors will leave your place of business with a deeper recollection of who you are. Therefore, you should participate in your art acquisitions to ensure that a positive image and personal touch is conveyed. CEOs, your participation in your company's art acquisition is required. Michaell Magrutsche Los Angeles Times March 20, 2006 Abstract art that's upbeat Michaell Magrutsche aims to inspire with his abstract work at Newport Beach Central Library. By Kathleen Stinson, Michaell Magrutsche knows he can't compete with nature. The abstract painter eschews representational art because even the best painting of a horse can never compete with a real horse. He likes abstract art because it involves the viewer and is proactive. "It's a lost cause to paint nature," Magrutsche said. "Michaell's Upbeat Abstracts," a group of acrylic paintings on display at Newport Beach Central Library shows a developed sense of art by a second- generation abstract painter. Magrutsche, who was born in Vienna, Austria, grew up exposed to the art of his uncle, Adolf Frohner, a famous Austrian abstract painter. Despite the strong influence, Magrutsche said he found his own way. He believes art should inspire and uplift. "These days when -I enter a room, I want to feel a painting -- I want its color and design to grab me," Magrutsche said. "I am not an elitist artist -- either you like it or you don't." He likes to paint what he calls "liminal" abstracts, which means the viewer interprets the space between the lines and brings something of themselves to the painting. "I would like my paintings to stimulate the viewer in a way that his or her imagination is triggered to fill in the blanks, thereby creating an interaction with the artwork and playing with the unfilled spaces in a myriad of possibilities," he said. He also believes a painting should stand on its own, not the backdrop for a new sofa. He said he's seen a painting by Picasso in a baroque -style apartment and in the most modern of apartment decor. Either place the Picasso is well placed. The artist uses bold colors and simple forms. "The color in a painting should grab you," he said. "I am inspired when something grabs my attention. I find vibrant color and special color combinations most rewarding." The show runs through March 31. Michaell's website: www.michaellart.com, Email: michaellart @cox.net MIChaell MagrutSCh Art for Art's Sake ? ?? How we have lost sight of art's purpose. by Michael] Magrutsche ©2007 Have you ever passed up an opportunity to purchase a piece of art you love only because you couldn't decide where you would display it? Maybe you felt it would clash with your decor, or that it was not in proportion to your space. Conversely, have you ever acquired a painting that you were indifferent towards simply because you envisioned it fitting into the decor? Sadly, the acquisition of art has degenerated into this either /or decision based upon a piece's eventual display site. Visual art must be capable of standing on its own. A piece of art should be an extension or expression of one's self and, therefore, fit anywhere. Artwork should have a profound meaning to you personally, or should touch your soul. If you purchase art that does not meet these criteria, then it is simply relegated to the status of one of the components of your interior design scheme, like a lampshade or the drapes. If you truly love a certain piece, you should never have to consider how it would fit into your decor. Buying art to blend with the decor will not only eventually bore you, but does a disservice to the artist who wants his pieces prominently displayed. Artists and art collectors, worldwide, rarely ask themselves where to display a canvas. They will hang a painting wherever it maximizes their viewing pleasure. Collectors' tastes in art change, just like their preferences in automobiles. They go through different phases with each: artists, styles, or schools of art; and SUVs, sports cars, or luxury sedans. Over the past few decades, the relationship between buyer and art has diminished. People are acquiring art to either satisfy their egos or as an investment. They focus on the "hot" artist of the day in order to flaunt their status, or they view their acquisition as a commodity with an eye towards appreciation. This results in many purchasers failing to appreciate the wonderful properties and intrinsic values that art possesses. So, the next time you consider a work of art, do not ask yourself where it will fit. If a painting has an effect on you, display it with abandon. Remind yourself that you are the custodian of a sliver of someone's soul expression to be handed down for someone else's enjoyment. Let it serve as a reflection of who you are and, above all, enjoy it! Michaell Magrutsche is a Newport Beach artist. His current exhibition, "Michaeli's Art in Public Spaces — Transforming Public Spaces With Art Versus Decor," is being held at the Newport Beach City Hall from November 21, 2006 through March 7, 2007. A native of Austria, Magrutsche has been employed in,virtually every aspect of the entertainment industry, from voiceover work and television broadcaster to television producer, programmer and distributor. His varied career began with a "fascination for the television medium.' After coming to Southern California in 1982, he co- founded a UHF TV licensing company. - When cable "hit big" in the states, Magrutsche embarked on a related endeavor to form a partnership with Austria GM Media to develop television programming and media events focused on the European markets. "Because of the contacts 1 had made here, I was able to help put together a children's pro- gram, which was essentially a pilot project for one of the first interactive CD- Roms," he says. "This led to a documentary for Austrian televi- sion about U.S. magicians. For these pro- grams, I traveled extensively between the United States and Austria. 1 have to say that I have always enjoyed working with Americans in this industry" In 1988, Magrutsche was approached by Hollywood producer Robert Evans ("Chinatown." "The Cotton Club ") to invest in an international television project. "I had to iske a chance and try this," he says. 'So 1 came back to Southern California and lived for a time in Evans' home. It was during this 1 diNd period that 1 discovered Orange Counry." It was ' also about this time that Magrutsche _- discovered himself in through ude: Vxir;,i participat- ing in a self-realization program which "gave . me a better understanding of how the mind and emotions work and made me realize that my perceptions of myself were wrong." This newfound "self- awareness' led Magrutsche to develop a "new language" to facilitate communication between business - minded and creative individuals. His efforts culminated in a book which he hopes to com- plete this summer. "Its essentially an emotional language that everyone can relate to," he says. "For example, if someone asks what a particular film is about and the response is that its a Western, that doesn't offer any insight into what the movie is really about. But when you say that it is a story about the betrayal of love that happens to be set in the West, that gives you a better understanding." Recently, I have overseen the construction of new docks, seawall and facilities on the harbor. I have guided several applications through the Coastal Commission. I hold a Coast Guard Master's license, a California Yacht Broker's license. I have been a director of Newport Harbor Yacht Club for the past seven years. For the past ten years, I have owned a 53 foot powerboat which is berthed in the harbor. I certify that all statements made on this application are true and correct to the best of my knowledge. I have had the pleasure of living and working in one of the most beautiful places in the world. My goals are to pro - actively work with our Civic Leaders and Residents to keep our Harbor and surrounding community's Safe, Clean, and Friendly.I have good relationships with State and local Government Agencies, boat owners, yacht clubs, businesses, and waterfront home owners. I work and play on the harbor and feel I have a good understanding of the needs and values needed to be open minded and responsible to make the right decisions for our community. Our harbor is one of, if not the finest and most premier destination harbors in the United States/World and I would like to be ,a part of the solutions going forward to make it even better. With the City going through some difficult transitions both on the water and off making it vital that we have committed and experienced leaders in the community to guide and help during these times and for the future. With my commitment and back ground in business, past and present Community involvement, working with the different stake holders throughout the harbor only shows my dedication to our City and Harbor. Signature 0 Date ATTACHMENTS for William T. Hossfeld's APPLICATION FOR APPOINTIVE POSITION SUMMARY FOR WANTING TO SERVE ON A COMMISSION I think I am qualified and would like to serve on either the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission or Planning Commission because I think I have a great deal of experience to offer on either Commission with my involvement with my children in various recreation activities on the east side of the "Bay" in Newport Beach and/or in my professional career in the real estate design, planning, development and construction of master planned, residential for sale, apartments and industrial developments throughout California, Arizona, Nevada, Washington and Colorado. My family has lived in Laguna Beach since July 1951 and I moved to Newport Beach in 1969 having lived in a duplex in CdM and then purchasing in Eastbluff since 1973. I have been in front of and made presentation to both Commissions representing both in my professional career as well as my volunteer work since being a resident of this fine community and know what to expect and I think how to best serve my Community. My education is in architecture, engineering and planning and has included being a guest lecturer at college, professional and civic groups and organizations throughout the United States. I have also been a licensed General Contractor as well as a Real Estate Salesman in the State of California. I know that every approval may not meet everyone's expectations but in my professional experience of presenting and having approvals for many millions of dollars worth of fine developments we have always pleased most parties involved through a series of compromises so it would be a "win — win situation." I have been directly involved in the design, processing and approval of projects from general plan amendments, CEQA approvals, many different commissions and/or boards including environmental transportation, school, harbor, parks, library, water, sanitation, airport, and planning as well as City/County Councils as well as Coastal Commission. As the Project Manager for the development and construction of these projects, I was also responsible for the budgeting, purchasing and construction, so I have a good fiscal understanding of costs, governmental constraints, laws, codes, design, use of materials and plain common sense. In past four years, I have been extremely involved in my Rotary Club and served for three years as its Director of Community Service and interfaced with many of our Community Leaders and the City's Staff including very active as Chairman of our Rotary Club's support of the First Battalion First Marines both at Christmas and in two of their tours of duty in Iraq. I have been involved as a child, teenager, and adult along our Orange County coast including being a life guard in Laguna Beach and very sensitive to my environment whether it is land, harbor and/or sea and the projects that I have constructed reflects that particular communities wants and needs. I would be very proud and pleased to serve on either Commission and I think I can fairly and professionally represent as a Commissioner for my Community on either Commission. Time and desire to serve are the top two reasons for my application to the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission. I have for many years worked with cities regarding the scheduling of park space. As a retired ocean lifeguard and the executive of a non profit company that works with county and city governments planning use of their beaches and many years as a swimming coach working in recreation my experience and caring for these assets will serve the city well. Over the years I have worked with various companies and utilities to pave roads, cut diseased trees maintaining parkways and streets in Lake Arrowhead, CA. Each year I write a business plan and create an annual budget for two businesses. I write marketing plans and create web sites to promote business and stimulate interest and sales. My 25 years in the school yearbook business required my working with and forming solid relationships with schools officials on a daily basis. As a business leader, recreation leader, nonprofit executive, retired ocean lifeguard and retired executive who worked with school officials on a daily basis I find myself truly qualified to serve on the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission.
