HomeMy WebLinkAbout15 - Cultural Arts Grants 2003-2004Agenda Item No. 15 July 22, 2003 CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: LIBRARY SERVICES Arts and Cultural Services Division; Jana Barbier, Cultural Arts Coordinator ( 717- 3870)jbarbier @city.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: Approval of 2003104 Cultural Arts Grants RECOMMENDATION: Approve recommended recipients for FY 2003104 Cultural Arts Grants as selected by the City Arts Commission in accordance with City Policy 1 -12 - Reserve Fund for Culture and Arts. DISCUSSION: BACKGROUND: The City Arts Commission has recommended awarding grants totaling $40,000. The Commission received written grant proposals from fifteen organizations for funding of approximately $72,650. After careful deliberation the following recommendations were approved at the June 12, 2003 meeting: Ballet Montmartre — Lecture /performance demonstrations to Newport Beach $1,500 and Orange County elementary and secondary students. Ballet Pacifica — Project to bus students from Newport Beach Elementary $3,400 Schools to The Irvine Barclay Theatre for a back -stage tour and lecture /demonstration. Baroque Music Festival —Two solo performances by internationally known Baroque $1,200 trumpet virtuoso John Thiessen at the Baroque Music Festival, 2004. Festival Ballet Theatre — Outreach performances in November /December for $1,800 Secondary students. Laguna Playhouse — THEATREREACH interactive theatrical presentations for 4th and $1,700 5'h grade students using Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Sign of the Beaver and By the Great Horn Spoon! Music Rainbow — Workshop experiences for 15tand 2nd grade Newport $2,000 Beach Elementary students, based on the book A House for Hermit Crab. Newport Beach Film Festival — Two day industry seminar program on $4,250 April 17 'h and 1 8'h, 2004 during NB Film Festival. Agenda Item No. July 22, 2003 Newport Beach Theatre Company — Attendance for High School students $1,000 at Fall 2003 production of "HONK" and scholarship Newport Beach students. Newport Beach Arts Commission — Three arts lectures including Frangoise Gilot, $4,000 Landscape painters and new book on color by Betty Edwards ( "Drawing on the right Side of the Brain ") Orange County Museum of Art — Art in the Museum and Adult Community $7,000 outreach programs for Newport Beach students, teachers, families and adults. Pacific Chorale — Sound -on -Site interactive, educational choral performances $1,850 for students in grades K -6. Newport Beach Sister City Association — International Festival, highlighting $2,000 the relationship and cultures of Newport Beach Sister Cities: Okazaki, Japan; Antibes, France and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. South Coast Repertory Theatre — Provide Educational Touring Performance $3,250 to each of the eight elementary schools within Newport Beach. Southland Opera -One performance of "Stories Come Alive" in each of $1,400 six elementary schools in Newport Beach along with one performance at the Newport Beach Public Library.
