SUBJECT: BUDGET AMENDMENT — ADDITION OF $94,000 TO THE CITY'S
CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS NEWPORT HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL'S
SWIMMING POOL REFURBISHMENT PROJECT
RECOMMENDATION:
The City Council approve a budget amendment increasing the Newport Harbor High
School Swimming Pool Project account (7011- C5100716) by $94,000 from General
Fund unappropriated reserves.
DISCUSSION:
Historically, the City of Newport Beach has used the Newport Harbor High School
swimming pool mostly in the summer for lap swim, swim classes and lifeguard training
and workouts. Of available hours of pool use, the City's use is approximately 10 %.
Newport Harbor High is currently undergoing a refurbishment of its swimming pool.
Prior to the school district obtaining bids for the project, City staff included $100,000 in a
CIP project to share in the refurbishment cost. Another $56,000 was added to the City's
share when the City Council adopted its FY 2003 -04 budget. The $156,000 amount
was 25% of the project bid of $625,000. Since the work began, numerous project
issues have arisen which have boosted the anticipated project cost to over $1 million.
The City /School District Council Committee met with School District officials this year
prior to bids being opened and agreed to a 25% share of the cost, with our share not
exceeding $250,000. The budget amendment for $94,000 would put us at that
commitment cap. The $94,000 will come from FY 2003 -04 General Fund revenues
which have exceeded the City's revenue projections.
