SUBJECT: Budget Amendment for Corona del Afar Afedian Rehabilitation
Recommendation:
Approve the attached budget amendment in the amount of SI 1,000 to fund the rehabilitation of
the landscaping and irrigation systems of three medians located on East Coast Highway near
Marguerite Avenue in Corona del Mar.
Background:
On May 26, 1998, the Council approved a budget amendment in the amount of S 19,000 to fund
the design and rehabilitation of the landscaping and irrigation systems of three medians in
Corona del Mar.
The three landscaped medians located on East Coast Highway near Marguerite Avenue
(originally constructed in 1993) were recently demolished and expanded by the California
Department of Transportation (Caltrans) at the request of the Public Works Department to
improve traffic circulation at that location. In the project, Caltrans constructed curbs, installed
patterned concrete and added new soil to the existing medians, but would not restore the
landscaping and irrigation systems nor add new landscaping to the expanded areas.
To date, the City has spent 53,000 for the development of landscape plans for the project. In
developing the plans, Staff sought input from the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce and
Business Improvement District. Following the development of plans, staff solicited bids from
qualified landscaping contractors. The lowest bid for the project was 526,778, which was higher
than expected due to the increased width of the medians.
The requested funding will allow staff to complete the project.
