Dear Mayor and City Council Members:
For some time now I have been an advocate of extending the bike path to
the jetty/wedge due to public safety (some distance away from the homes).
I recently attended a CERT (CommunityEmergencyResponseTraining) for the
peninsula where we discussed emergency egress and resident's need to
prepare. One thing became quite important.....extending and improving the
bike path to the jetty and Wedge. It would offer one more way of getting
people off the peninsula in case of an emergency as well as day-to-day
safety mixing cars, bikes, strollers, skateboards, anything else that
rolls, and pedestrians.
There appears to be movement on this issue from several angles including
resolving private encroachment onto the public right-of-way by private
homes and some solutions will hopefully be proposed and studied tonight at
the study session @ 4:00PM.
It is vitally important to stress and I recommend the following:
-request a survey by post card to all the NPB residents to search the
interest;
-Consider putting the extension on the ballot as soon as possible;
-it is vital for emergency egress, which is just a matter of time;
-it is vital for the same reasons during "big wave days;"
-it offers quicker access to the restrooms at Balboa Pier (versus our
properties);
-it is vital for every day safety as now we mix cars, segways, bikes,
strollers,
pedestrians, and all rolling devices in an unsafe manner into Balboa
Blvd
and in front of our garages
-we spent millions of $$ for visitors to enjoy coming the City,
accommodate parking,
visit the new Marina Park but we put them on the streets impeding vehicle
egress
since we have to be 3 feet away from any bike rider by California law,
which renders
our boulevard to one lane;

-update the Master Bicycle Plan, which excluded the majority ofbike
activity in the
city.....the peninsula.
-the extension would also offer beach/ocean accessibility to the disabled
CERT is an excellent means for residents being prepared. The extension
will assist the residents and visitors to that end.
