Coastal flooding from the Pacific open coast is a result of Stillwater levels and Waves. Stillwater levels are from tides. fir. _ •.. ..:. a Waves originate from: 1) wind driven waves and 2) ocean swells traveling from storms 1% Chance event per year. PA National Flood Insurance Program NFIP is voluntary and Newport Beach currently participates along with approx. 550 other communities in California. NFIP provides federally backed affordable flood insurance to ALL participants. Compliance with NFIP requires the City to regulate development in the special hazard flood zones. Don't build below the flood line. 3 National Flood Insurance Program • Home owners insurance does not cover for flood damage. • Federal law requires flood insurance for federally backed loans ( Conforming - Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac). Jumbo Loans Too. • Mortgage refinance or map change would trigger the requirement for flood insurance. al Current FIRM ti '- wc :71IP v v 7 tV ZZ, 1p 76 Cl T F nAllm e -H PACIFT W4 PCEAN 0 Proposed FIRM 4 five s% r r •`6 CITY OF NEWPORT REACH 060227 jj.,m r' t a'' ' L 11 0 0 gim Current FIRM Proposed FIRM 4g e 16 INC dbIL 1 :. Results frorn this Open Pacific Coust IOPC} Study will produce flood and wave data for the National Flood Insurance Prograrn (NFIP) Flood Insurance Study IRS) report and regulatory Flood Insuranoe Rate Map (FIRM) panels. Study Methodology Coastal flooding from the Pacific open coag is a res+rlt of local stillwater levels and waves. Stip (water levels include the effects of titles, storm surge, and ri%*T-ine discharges. Waves impacting the shoreline originate from two sources: 1) locally -generated wind -driven wrnies and 2) ocean swells travelling ftorn distant storms. When combined, these stillwater level and weave components strongly influence the flood hazards along (Orange County's open coast slrorehhe. The OPC Study is guided by FEMA"s 2005 Guidelines for Coastal Flood Hazard AneWs and Mapping for vie Pacific coast of the I_lnited States- The stillwater elevation and wave analyses rely on a colnhrination of retmnal-scale hvdrodynarnic models and localized one- dimensional )i -D) wave analysis transects.
