HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016-115 - Recognizing October 11, 2016 as Vin Scully Day in Newport BeachRESOLUTION NO. 2016-115 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA, RECOGNIZING OCTOBER 11, 2016 AS VIN SCULLY DAY IN NEWPORT BEACH WHEREAS, Vincent Edward "Vin" Scully was born in the Bronx, New York, on November 29, 1927; WHEREAS, when Vin Scully was 8 years old he decided he wanted to become a sports announcer; WHEREAS, in 1950, at the age of 22, Vin Scully joined the radio and television broadcast team for the Brooklyn Dodgers; WHEREAS, Vin Scully announced Brooklyn Dodgers' games through 1957, after which time he moved with the Dodgers to Los Angeles as the first team in Major League Baseball to play in Southern California; WHEREAS, since 1950, Vin Scully has announced more than 9,000 Major League Baseball games and almost half of all Los Angeles Dodgers games ever played; WHEREAS, Vin Scully has been awarded the honors of National Sportscaster of the Year from the National Sports Media Association in 1965, 1978, and 1982; the Ford Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982; induction into the National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame in 1991; induction into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1992; induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1995; induction into the National Association of Broadcasters Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2009; Top Sportscaster of All -Time from the American Sportscasters Association in 2009; and the Baseball Commissioner's Historic Achievement Award in 2014; WHEREAS, Vin Scully has instilled a love of baseball, America's great and poetic game, within legions of Dodgers and baseball fans and Newport Beach residents, from generation to generation; and WHEREAS, on October 2, 2016 Vin Scully completed his 67th and final season as the voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach resolves as follows: Section 1: The City Council does hereby express its deep and lasting gratitude to Vin Scully for all he has done for generations of baseball fans, and declares October 11, 2016, to be "Vin Scully Day in Newport Beach." Furthermore, the City Council wishes Vin Scully a long, healthy, enjoyable and blessed next phase of his incredible life, filled with happiness, green fields, family gatherings, and the everlasting roar of the crowd, which he has loved so much. Resolution No. 2016-115 Page 2 of 2 Section 2: If any section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase of this resolution is, for any reason, held to be invalid or unconstitutional, such decision shall not affect the validity or constitutionality of the remaining portions of this resolution. The City Council hereby declares that it would have passed this resolution, and each section, subsection, sentence, clause or phrase hereof, irrespective of the fact that any one or more sections, subsections, sentences, clauses or phrases be declared invalid or unconstitutional. Section 3: Staff recommends the City Council find the adoption of the attached resolution and the recognition of October 11, 2016 as Vin Scully Day is not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) pursuant to Sections 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment) and 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in Section 15378) of the CEQA Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, because it has no potential for resulting in physical change to the environment, directly or indirectly. Section 4: This resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption by the City Council, and the City Clerk shall certify the vote adopting the resolution.
