HomeMy WebLinkAbout532 - Dog Leash Law` UDINANCE NO: 5S2' T1i' City of: Newport B22eh, by t1rough rough its City Council, does ordain as follows: Section 1- Ordinance No. 473 of *e Vity of Newport Beach is here- by amended, by amending Sections 4 and.5 thereof to read as follows: keetion 4. It shall be unlaw- ful for any person having the care, charge or control of any dog, to permit or allow said dog to be at large upon any beach, street, alley, park or public place in said city, unless such - dog is securely held by a leash or chain not exceeding six feet in length, and any such dog may be ordered muzzled by the Chief, of Police or any public officer or ordered removed from such beach, street, alley, park or other public place. _ Section 5. It shell -be the duty of the Chief of Police at all times to impound all dogs found running at large on the streets, alleys, parks, beaches or other public places in said city. If a - dog is picked up which is prop- erly tagged, the Chief of Police shall at once give notice either personally or by postcard to the owner of such dog, that such dog is impounded. If such dog, is not properly tagged, written, notice that such dog is im- pounded shall be posted by post- ing a notice thereof on the bul- letin board in the City Hall. Such notice shall contain a brief description of such dog and shall contain a statement to the effect that if such dog is not re- deemed and the license paid. if such license is due, within three days, such dog will be destroyed or sold and it shall be the duty of said Chief of Police to de- stroy or sell all dogs which are not redeemed as herein pro- vided, within three 'days after notice shall be given or posted as aforesaid. The Chief of Po- lice must feed and water such dogs during the three days that the same are impounded. Section 2. Any person violat- ing any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be guilty of a mis- demeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by fine not exceeding $100.00, or by im- prisonment in the County Jail of Orange County, or the City Jail of Newport Beach not exceeding 30 days, or by both such fine and im- prisonment. Section 3. This Ordinance shall be printed and published once in NEWPORT BALBOA NEWS - TIMES, a semi - weekly newspaper printed and circulated -in the City of Newport Beach, and shall take. effect and be in force thirty days after its passage. The above and foregoing Ordi- nance was introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council of Newport Beach, held on the 4th day of December, 1944 and .,was finally passed and adopted on the 2nd day of January, 1945, at a regular meeting thereof by the fol.- lowing roll call vote thereof: AYES, Councilmen: Allen, Isbell, Reed, Hall; NOES, Councilmen: Stanley; ABSENT, Councilmen: None.
