The work herein provided for is to be done in accor- <br />dance with the plans, profiles and cross - sections on file in the <br />office of the City Engineer of the City d'f;Newport Beach, and all <br />work shall, during its progress and on its completion, conform to <br />the lines and grades which may from time to time be given by said <br />City-- EUgineer. <br />2. PILES- All piles of whatever kind shall be cut from <br />growing trees, free from wind or heart shakes, large or unsound <br />knots., decay or other defects which would impair the strength or <br />durability of the pile. Only butt cuts, cut about the ground swell <br />of the tree, and with both ends square, will be accepted. They <br />shall be peeled of bark and the knots trimmed, and the specified' <br />sizes shall be, after peeling, straight and uniformly tapering. <br />The piles shall be of the variety commonly called Oregon or Wash- <br />ington fir, and may be the yellow or red variety. It shall ndt <br />have at any point of its length and at any edge sap wood more than <br />two (2) inches in width, and shall be free from knots over 1i inch <br />diameter. <br />6%hen the piles are being driven the large end must be <br />j cut off square so that the hammer will strike it square and solid <br />and the head of the pile protected by means of rings to keep it <br />from splitting or brooming. The bottom end of the piles must be <br />perfectly square if they are driven with a square end, or if <br />pointed, the point must be true and in the center of the pile. <br />The piles must be of a length as shown on the detail plans, and <br />-1- <br />
