tiMEAS, appeals from parents, teachers, various other
citizens and associations of this community have been made to the
City Council of the City of Newport 'Beach, for legislation to
prohibit or control the distribution and sale of lurid, pDrno-
graphic, and obscene literature; and
Due to the increase in various forms of literature to be
obtained on the market which protrays horror, sex, sensationalism,
depravity, crime and licentiousness, this Council has been
requested to take steps to control or prohibit the sale and
distribution of such literature; and
This Council is informed that a bill to control or
prohibit the sale and distribution of such obscene and lurid
literature is being presented to the Legislation for adoption; and
This Council is firmly convinced that a state -wide control
of this problem which has enveloped a mayor part of our United
States, is necessary in order to combat the evil influence which
is available to our children on many bookstands in most every city}
NOW, TFIE woRE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the
City of Newport Beach as follows:
1. The Legislature of the State of California is hereby
urged and requested to pass proper legislation to prohibit or con-
trol the sale of all literature within the State protraying and
sensationalizing horror, sex, depravity, crime, obscenity and
licentiousness, particularly where it comes into the hands of
children.
2. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward copies
of this resolution to our representatives in the Legislature and
the Legislative Counsel.
The above and foregoing resolution was duly and regularly
passed and adopted by the City Council of the City of Newport
Beach at a regular meeting thereof held on the 11th day of
