HomeMy WebLinkAbout6920 - Commending Dr. HayakawaRESOLUTION NO. 6920 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH COMMENDING DR. S. Ie HAYAKAWA, ACTING PRESIDENT OF SAN FRANCISCO STATE COLLEGE v, WHEREAS, an organized militant faction composed of students, faculty members and outside agitators is attempting to destroy the state college system; and WHEREAS, these militant groups have concentrated their efforts at San Francisco State College and by tactics of coercion, intimidation and violence have succeeded in temporarily dis- rupting the normal educational process at that college; and WHEREAS, since his appointment as Acting President of San Francisco State College, Dr. S. I. Hayakawa has displayed qualities of leadership and personal courage despite the insults and threats of violence which have been directed at him; and WHEREAS, Dr. Hayakawa has indicated that his adminis- tration is interested in solving the problems of higher education and in responding to legitimate grievances of students and faculty while insisting that order must be maintained; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach that the City Council hereby commends Dr. Hayakawa on the valiant and resourceful manner in which he has faced the problems at San Francisco State College. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council urges the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees of the State College System to give their full support to Dr. Hayakawa in his efforts to restore the campus at San Francisco State College to normal operation. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution r` • _ be sent to Governor Ronald Reagan, Chancellor Glenn S. Dumke, the Board of Trustees of the State College System, Dr. S. I.
