HomeMy WebLinkAbout8254 - Mandatory Sentencing Initiative• RESOLUTION NO. 8254 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE MANDATORY SENTENCING INITIATIVE WHEREAS, the lack of a standardized sentencing policy for serious felonies has led to discrepancies in sentencing between various judges, to the extent that the use of probation has, in many instances, allowed the release of felons who have repeated the same types of violent crimes which caused their original convictions; and WHEREAS, the intent of Senate Bill 237, co- authored by 35 members of the California State Senate, was to impose mandatory sentencing for certain types of violent crimes; and WHEREAS, although Senate Bill 237 received almost absolute support by the Senate, it was subsequently stalled by a narrow margin in the Assembly Criminal Justice Committee; and WHEREAS, the Mandatory Sentencing Initiative, sponsored by the California Peace Officers' Association following the defeat of Senate Bill 237, would accomplish the same provisions as SB 237 and has the support of many of the various law enforce- ment associations and groups through the state; m d WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach has determined that the provisions of the Mandatory Sentencing Initiative would be beneficial and in the best interests of its citizens; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach hereby expresses its support of the Mandatory Sentencing Initiative as the method of establishing a necessary standardized mandatory sentencing policy in California for serious felonies.
