RESOLUTION NO. 8783
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE COMPLETION
OF THE CORONA DEL MAR FRONTAGE ROAD PROJECT
AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE DATE
WHEREAS, the construction of the Corona del Mar
Freeway has the full support of the cities of Costa Mesa,
Irvine, Newport Beach and the County of Orange; and
WHEREAS, the cities of Orange County have committed
approximately 4.5 million dollars in FAU funds towards the
construction of this needed freeway; and
WHEREAS, financial constraints have forced the State
to reduce the status of the next phase of construction from
that of a freeway to an improved frontage road; and
WHEREAS, the California Department of Transportation's
staff is now recommending further delay on construction of the
frontage road project due to a change in the staff's evaluation
criteria for freeway projects; and
WHEREAS, the State of California has accepted and
spent the 4.5 million dollars contributed by the Orange County
cities; and
WHEREAS, the State of California opted to spend said
4.5 million dollars on one particular portion of the freeway
improvements rather than allocating it to the project in total;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach finds that any further
reduction in the progress on the Corona del Mar frontage road
project would be an intolerable action by the State Highway
Commission and Caltrans.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council

of the City of Newport Beach offers its support to the completion
of the Corona del Mar frontage road project at the earliest
possible date.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a delegation from Orange
County present our viewpoint to the State Highway Commission
at their next scheduled hearing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution
be forwarded to the proper agencies and representatives connected
with the freeway construction.
