HomeMy WebLinkAbout9554 - Senate Bill 12RESOLUTION NO. 955+ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING OBJECTION TO FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS THAT BALLOT MATERIALS BE PRINTED IN OTHER THAN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND SUPPORTING SENATE BILL 12 WHEREAS, Federal regulations require ballot material to be printed in other than the English language; and WHEREAS, this multi - lingual voting procedure is unnecessarily costing the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of additional dollars each election due to printing costs and implementation of the law; and WHEREAS, State Senator Bob Wilson has introduced Senate Bill 12 which seeks to abolish the multi - lingual election voting laws; and WHEREAS, the financial burden on the taxpayers created by multi - lingual voting procedures far outweighs any benefit to those American citizens not able to read or under- stand the English language, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach hereby objects to Federal require- ments that translations be provided with all ballot materials. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council supports Senate Bill 12 which would eliminate these burdensome multi- lingual voting procedures. ADOPTED this 14th day of May 1979.
