HomeMy WebLinkAbout96-14 - Illuminated Sign RevisionsRESOLUTION NO. 96 -14 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH INITIATING AN AMENDMENT TO TITLE 20 OF THE NEWPORT BEACH MUNICIPAL CODE TO REVISE STANDARDS FOR ILLUMINATED SIGNS • WHEREAS, Title 20 of the Newport Beach Municipal Code authorizes the City Council to adopt a resolution initiating amendments to the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Newport Beach; and WHEREAS, the City Council intends to initiate amendments to Section 20.06.070 (A -2) of Title 20 of the City ofNewport Beach Municipal Code to set new standards for illuminated signs; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach to initiate an amendment to Section 20.06.070 (A -2) of Title 20 of the Newport Beach Municipal Code with the proposed amendment to read as follows: �V% -�11 1flf p }Ifl U }�1 /il W fly } }I }l f }/l W II }LLTA1U EMI I \' /J W 1/N1011/ }L 1 }\A }Utl / \ }1 }I . _ •1• _ IRT pPl \7 \a\ aim r 11 \'�YU 111M11�' /1T� %III�MII'J1�J1611 � }1�1 }}Aph}�Olq!•611\I }1�11T I ILLUMINATED SIGNS. Unless otherwise prohibited by this Chapter; signs may be illuminated provided such illumination does not interfere with the use and enjoyment of adjacent properties or create any public safety hazards. Exterior light sources shall be shielded from view and directed away from adjacent properties. The Planning Director may order the dimming of aW illumination found to be excessively bright, based on the following • guidelines: • BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, that the Planning Commission is directed to include in the proposed amendment provisions relating to the amortization of legally nonconforming illuminated signs. Such areas include most residential areas. Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean. MEDIUM Areas where signs are relatively isolated or areas adjacent to 45 to 70 "Low" ambient light areas. HIGH Central business districts. I iWy lighted streets or parking 70 to 100 areas. 00 to 140 VERY HIGH High rise signs and signs in areas of high sign competition. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, that the Planning Commission is directed to include in the proposed amendment provisions relating to the amortization of legally nonconforming illuminated signs.
