HomeMy WebLinkAbout88-118 - UCI Saferides Program• • RESOLUTION NO. 138 -118 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH COMMENDING THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT IRVINE (UCI) FOR THEIR "SAFERIDES" PROGRAM. WHEREAS, alcohol - related traffic accidents resulted in 2,105 deaths in 1986 in Orange Country, and 34% of these involved intoxicated drivers of college age; and WHEREAS, the Associated Students of UCI, representing over 11,000 students, realized they were in a unique position to provide leadership in alleviating this growing problem; and WHEREAS, the Associated Students of UCI, of their own initiative, began an alcohol awareness and responsible drinking campaign, the focal point of which is the "Saferides" program; and WHEREAS, ASUCI Saferides, begun in 1985, provides a free ride home for any UCI student who has been drinking, and serviced a total of 455 students in 1987, 238 of which were from Newport Beach. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach gives this endorsement of support to the Associated Students of UCI in recognition of their achievements in providing a tangible solution to a major problem affecting their fellow students. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that as the problem of driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants is a community problem, we commend the Associated Students of UCI for their civic mindedness in carrying out the Saferides program. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk be directed to transmit a certified copy of this Resolution to the Associated Students at UCI, along with the gratitude of the citizens of Newport Beach.
