A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT
BEACH ESTABLISHING THE NEWPORT BEACH GANG TASK FORCE.
WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes that street gangs who visit and
frequent our City can become involved in criminal activities which detract from the
safety and tranquility of our community; and
• WHEREAS, the City Council supports efforts from the Police Department and
other concerned groups within the community to minimize the impact of street gangs
and discourage their activities; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to establish a Newport Beach Gang Task
Force to advise the City Council in matters pertaining to the organization, activity and
presence of resident or non - resident gangs and gangsters within or near the City
boundaries.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Newport Beach hereby establishes the Newport Beach Gang Task Force as follows:
MEMBERSHIP - Nominated by the Mayor and confirmed by the full City Council.
1. Two (2) members of the City Council.
2. Two (2) at -large members with broad community experience.
3. A member representing the Newport-Mesa Unified School District
Board of Trustees.
STAFF SUPPORT - The Committee shall be supported primarily from the Police
Department and as necessary by the Deputy City Manager.
DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS - The Newport Beach Gang Task Force shall seek
to:
1. Remain informed of the gang problem by gathering information from
public and private sources.
2. Provide an interface with the Newport Mesa Unified School District in
order to develop a coherent and cohesive partnership with the City in
an effort to discourage the formation of gangs within the school system.
3. Report to the City Council quarterly or more frequently as required on the
work of the Task Force.
4. Recommend to the City Council the adoption of ordinances, resolutions,
rules and regulations and to enhance community awareness in order to
prevent gang activity.
5. Perform other duties relating to gang activity as the City Council may
request.
TERM - The Newport Beach Gang Task Force shall continue to function until
such time as its service is no longer determined necessary by the City Council.
