PROJECT OVERVIEW: The City of Newport Beach’s “Sculpture in the Civic Center Park” exhibition Round III will showcase up to nine sculptures within the City’s new 14-acre Civic Center Park. Artworks will be on temporary display for two years (October 2017 –September 2019). The artworks selected for exhibition shall exemplify the diversity of style, scale, media & artists. Specific locations for artworks within the Park grounds will be determined by the selection committee. The total budget for artist honorariums is up to $45,000. The intent of the City of Newport Beach’s temporary sculpture exhibition is to activate the splendor of the Civic Center Park and offer residents & visitors new ways of viewing sculpture. The sculpture exhibition will engage visitors in discovering creative artists from around the world and unveil ideas that make them think and feel differently. The exhibit will encourage people of all ages and experiences to share their thoughts and questions with each other. II. SELECTION COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES: Review photos of each submission online via CaFE (https://admin.callforentry.org/admin/). Per the selection criteria outlined below, score each image from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest score. [Further instructions about this process are described in section IV. Online Judging Process] Gather at Newport Beach Civic Center on August 23rd for an in-person meeting to discuss all top-scoring submissions and review site locations Establish consensus with other selection committee members during the in-person meeting to narrow down submissions up to 9 winners,three alternates,and assign site locations. III. SELECTION CRITERIA: Artworks submitted to CaFE shall be reviewed and scored from 1 to 7 based on the following preliminary selection criteria: Artistic Merit: o Artwork is of high-quality and demonstrative of originality and artistic excellence Durability: o The artwork is made of high-quality materials which can withstand the natural outdoor elements of coastal Southern California o Artwork requires minimal to no maintenance Practicality: o Artwork is of appropriate subject matter for audiences of all ages o Artwork is safe and shall not exhibit unsafe conditions or factors that may bear on public liability Site appropriateness: o Artwork is suitable in scale to be seen in environment IV. ONLINE JUDGING INSTRUCTIONS: July 24 –August 7, 2017 Judges shall, on their own time, login to CaFE to review each submission: o https://admin.callforentry.org/admin/ Review each image using the outlined selection criteria as a guide. IN-PERSON REVIEW: Wednesday, August 23rd Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Drive, Newport Beach 5 pm Site tour, Review of sculpture locations, 6 -9 pm In-Person Review of submittals All top-scoring artworks will be considered and discussed in depth. Pick up to nine artworks and three alternates of various sizes, mediums, and subject matter. Based on scale and impact of work, the committee will assign artworks to site locations. Based on artwork value and preliminary budget provided by artists, the committee will assign honorarium amounts to each artwork. Artist honorariums for artworks selected should total up to $45,000.
