The California Fire Code
It’s the law of the Land
Is based upon model codes –the International Code
Council (ICC) Fire Code
Fire Code is Part 9 of Title 24 of the CA code of
regulations.
Fire Code includes building and non-building standards.
Statutory authority comes from the Government Code
and Health and Safety Code
The Model (ICC) Fire Code
How is it developed?
Formed in 1994 as an umbrella organization
Created to support common code development
Any party can propose a change/deletion/modification
Items approved are published in the code
It is a consensus code

Building Division Purpose
Enforcement of the Building Standards to
ensure the minimum requirements to
safeguard the public health, safety and
general welfare.
Appeals Board Purpose
To hear appeals of orders, decisions or
determinations made by the Chief Building
Official or Chief Fire Marshal relative to the
application and interpretation of the
building and fire code standards.
Appeals Board Limitations
•Application for appeal shall be based on a claim
that the true intent of the codes have been
incorrectly interpreted.
•The Appeals Board may over turn a decision
made by the Chief Building Official or the Chief
Fire Marshal.
