A. Approval of Minutes of the May 10, 2018, City Arts Commission Meeting
2. Draft of 05/10/2018 Minutes
KINDA INCORRECT
(1) "Susan Cramer corrected the March minutes to reflect her comments regarding the City
Arts Commission coordinating with the proposed Newport Village development for
placement of art. "
(2) She inquired regarding an opportunity for public input for the fifth Concert
on the Green.
(3) "The City Arts Commission should consider placing art in several new
apartment buildings with malls connected to them."
MORE CORRECT
(1) "Susan Cramer corrected the March minutes to reflect her comments regarding the City Arts
Commission coordinating with the proposed Newport Village development." PERIOD.
It was not just about placement or art. (though I did say that)
It was about public input to the owners of the proposed development with and via the NB City Arts
Commission. The owners asked in a newspaper article in 2017, when they bought the Ardell Property
on Mariner"s Mile, for public wants and needs so they could plan. And, they meant it. It is quite an
opportunity and the owners are incredible to ask the public. Their plans are not finalized. The City Arts
Commission could ask them about much more than just placement of art in their capacity regarding
artistic venues and activities and even appearance.
(3) "The City Arts Commission should consider placing art in several new apartment buildings with malls
connected to them."
I said that. However, quote was partial and not quite accurate because I was mentioning the venue of
the mixed-use developments (apartments with mini mail). And, again, the point of it was that these
things can be brought to the attention of the developers with contact during the Planning Department
process. The Planning Department has a great new look to their City webpage. I was suggesting the City
Arts Commission look at them periodically and think outside the box of their current event planning and
be available for the public to comment on the Arts level of City Planning.
I ADD definition for understanding: This is because of one word in the PURPOSE of the Committee and
that is the word "AESTHETIC"
Defined, that includes: "a set of principles underlying and guiding the work of a particular artist or
artistic movement." Not just, "concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty." But that, too.
In full, the purpose of the City Arts Commission is:
"Appointed by City Council, the City Arts Commission acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in
all matters pertaining to artistic, aesthetic and cultural aspects of the City. The City Arts Commission also
recommends to the City Council the adoption of such ordinances, rules and regulations as it may deem
necessary for the administration and preservation of fine arts, performing arts, historical, aesthetic and
cultural aspects of the community. On behalf of the City, the Arts Commission actively encourages
programs for the cultural enrichment of the community and performs such other duties relating to the
arts as the City Council may require.
