Still full of Spirit after 20 years
The·Spirit Run has legs and continues to use
them to raise more than $100,000 annually
for five Newport Beach elementary schools.

Winters get chilly living in Corona del Mar

S everal weeks ago, my furnace went
out Now, to someone living in
Minnesota. hearing someone In
Southern California complain about the
lack of a furnace might seem absurd.
After all, Minnesota registers much
lower temperatures, but people in
Minnesota are prepared for those
temperatures. Their houses are
insulated.. their clothes are 1n ulated.
From the pictures I've seen, most of
them are insulated. Also, they ha-ve grist
big piles of wood llO that if their furnace
should go out. they can build big. warm
ftres in their ftreplace&

On those damp, gray
days when the sun

an alann, and various fumUy members
arrived whh various :pot heaters. Let
me tell you; a gmaJI eltttric heater Is no
wbsd.tute ror a furnace. I had one ln my
bedroom. one ln the Uvlng room anct
one in the kitchen. in the momJng; I
wouJd f1*h out pngerty and rum ~'
helter on, pulling my arm ~ q\fiddy
under the covers.. After enough time. I
would get up and try to get ~ in
. the 2-foot area or heat, then go down
the free-ling hall a..~ quickly as I could
and huddle in front ot the kitchen
heater while 1 made my breakfast. then
another dart to the Uving room. wh~ I
sat as close to the heater as I could
wJthout setting m~ on Ore.

the naH right on the head.
WtJUam Pezzullo, in his letter
published Thursday, may have
distilled all the rhetoric from the
past few montlls into a few key
phrases. In his letter, he says.

At a recent City Council
meeting. a speaker accused
novice Councilman Allan

because he advocated measures
to control the traffic headed to
the ~wap meet from the north -
~ta Ana. I don't necessa.ri1y
thuu Mansoor is a racist, but a
mort savvy politician might
have found a less overt way of
identifying the problem. Candor
can be refreshing. but it can also
get you into trouble.
The swap meet issue has been
Oogged for months and has been
resolved, albeit temporarily, as
we await a reassessment by the
City C.Ouncil in a few months. In
the meantime, Pe2zu.Do has
lanced this boil and it needs to
be drained
Many years ago, I lived and
worked in Santa Anq, near Main
Street At that time. the area was
a thriving upscale retail and
financial center surrounded by
neighborhoods of dean,

time, Santa Ana has changed -
not for the better. The decay in
those once-proud
neighborhoods is obvious. As I
drive the streets of the Westside
of Costa Mesa today, I see the
beginning of the same kind of
decay ..
If, as some suggest, the core of
the problems on the WestsJde is
the burgeoning Latino
population, bow do we address
it? Do we aeate our own foreign
policy, line up the buses and
send every person living on the
Westside illegally back across the
border? Do we d ose the Job
C.enter and somehow manage to
force all the charities and social
service entities out of the city
and assume those using their
services will quickly foUow'l Or
do we acknowledge that these
are unrealistic approaches and
talc.e a different tad? Do we
create an environment where all
the children in this community,
including those of immigrant
parents. receive a quality
education and a fair chance at
~uccess? Do we embrace the
rich, positive cultural difference.,
the Latino immigrants bring
with them and work to help
them assimilate into ow own
culture? Do we help them
understand the laws of this land
and male a speciaJ effon to help
them comply? Do we create
alternatives to gan~ and all the
problems they represenl? If so.
who takes the lead?
As I said in a letter many
months ago, this is a time for
enlightened leadership in our
city. Our leaders cannot just toss
this hot potato into the lap of
the Community Redevelopment
Action Committee and expect it
to come up with reasonable
solutions without some dear
direction. While Vice Mayor
Ou-is Steel has made his
position clear over the past two
years. where does the rest of ow
City Council stand?
Does Mansoor have a soluuon
to "the problem!
Does Councilman Gary
Monahan, with his ties to the
Spanish-speaking community
through bis affiliation with St.
Joachim Oturch, represent the
interests of that part of our
community? I have seen nothing
specifically that leads me to
believe he does.
What a.bout Mayor Karen
Robinson? What are her plans
for the Latinos in our midst?
And what a.bout
Councilwoman Libby Cowan,
who st:i.ned up the whole swap
meet issue lo the first place?
Does she have a plan for the
integration of the Latino
population into the mainstream.
or does she agree with those
who feel they are ·the problem"
and must go? If so, how and
when? Does Costa Mesa become
a model for successful
assimilation of this growing
population or does It become
South Santa Ana?
Once again. we face the Issue
of leadership in this city. Who
will provide it? Who will step up
to this chaQenge and make the
right choices for the citizens of
this community?

Newport deserves praise for
handling of protected ficus tree
The city of Newpon Beach should be
commended for moving the Pharmacy
Tree, the ficus tree in front of the
pharmacy on Main Street. on the BaJboa
Peninsula, and preparing it for
transplantat1on, rather than simply
destroyin g it.
The city w~ not required to talc.e this
action, it did .,o on tts own volition. That
it did elect to preserve th.is tree speaks
volumes toward a goodwill commitment
to respect its mature trees and its
"Spec1aJ City Trees" in particular. The
Pharmacy Tree was o ne of the Special
City Trees that ts protected by the c ity's
policy that governs retention and
removal o f the city's trees.
During the boxing of the tree last
Friday, the roots were exposed. and were
available for observation. An interesting
observation to me was the appearance
of the large roots that were cut some five
years a.go when the hardscape of Main
Street was replaced. The large roots that
were cut years ago only showed some
regeneration of very small roots aJong
the cut edge of the rooL There was no
regeneration of the large roots that tend
to cause the problems with the ficus
tree.
This shows that root pruning of the
ficus tree is a feasible solution to the
ficus tree problem in Newport Beach.
The roots of the ficus trees can be
pruned severely without sacrificing the
whole tree. Just as branches of the trees
are pruned on a regular basis. root
pruning should be done regularly.
This could provide a basis for a policy
relating to the other J.000 fitu'> trees m
Newport Beach. and prevent the kmd of
lieu'> fracas that involved Mam 'itreet
reu~ntJy. Root pruning <,hould occur

The Anteaters entered Friday
night's match ranked No. 2 and took
down No. 3 UCLA for the second time
this season in front of l,013 at Pauley
Pavilion, where Spe.raw used to play.
Speraw played at UCLA in the early
'90s and hetped lead the Bruins to
two national championships. He was
also an assistant coach fo1 UCLA the
pa.st four years.
"We showed our composure,"

after the match. "It was a nice thing
to see as a coach because we were a
little off but sometimes you're off and
it's how you react that makes the
