Walt Howald PB&R Commissioner 700 Narcissus Ave. Corona del Mar, CA 92625 949-922-9926 Received After Agenda Printed June 9, 2020 Non -Agenda Item June 5, 2020 Dear Laguna Beach and Newport Beach City Councils, Meals on Wheels (MoW) has been a great service for seniors in many cities. Age Well Senior Services is the contractor in south county. I assume they deserve much of the credit. In May, a MoW customer sent me this photo: "Thought Styrofoam was banned." Later, she wrote "They had recycle 6 on bottom, I put them in the recycle bin." I told her Styrofoam food ware is banned, it's a type of #6, #3-7 are not recyclable. And this got me concerned about the unnecessary waste from 15 meals/week, week after week. Imo - Three Meals/Day for Each Person by Meals on Wheels Microwave/Dishwasher Safe Containers from Takeout On 6/9, Age Well contract was in Dana Point's council agenda. Now I know Cities pay them too. I asked Dana Point to talk to Age Well for a reusable container pilot program. While delivering the food, yesterday's containers could be picked up to be washed at the facility. (And I showed this photo of microwave/dishwasher safe containers I got from takeout orders.) Councilman Wyatt said this should be done, even if Covid didn't create more MoW customers and similar services. I hope Laguna and Newport could also talk to Age Well for the reusable pilot. Unfortunately, many people know little about the different aspects of single -use. This MoW customer is concerned that reusables will cost her more. Numerous studies show reusables are cheaper than disposables. Small Business Development Center (SBDC) said in the Restaurant Rapid Recovery webinar: "If you use all disposable items, you'll have definite increase of cost, so lowering your food cost is important." I tell people Cities have landfill diversion targets to meet, are required to address environmental justice. Sometimes, I get "I don't believe you." So, no chance to tell them the health consequences of single -use, plastic and trash. Age Well could be a good partner for public education. I'd be very happy to help on this reusable pilot program. Once set, it will enable me to go upstream to do more trash talks. Thank you! Hoiyin Ip
