Hello city council members,
In light of the long overdue racial justice movement that is occurring throughout our nation, I would like to know what
you, as our council leaders, are doing to support our Black and Brown communities. What actions are you taking now
and in the future to support diversity in Newport?
I have been exploring the Newport Beach, CA city budget and I am disturbed by the unequal distribution of funding! As a
Newport Beach resident, I would like to know the reason it is necessary to fund our police with more funds than
community programs or human resources?
It seems to me that we should be reallocating more funds into our community. So again, I ask, why is it necessary that
the police departments receive more funding than any other area of our community?
I appreciate you taking time to explain this to me and clarify your intentions with our city budget.
Sincerely,
Courtney Taylor

Dear Newport Beach City Council,
My name is Camellia Edalat and I am a resident of Newport Coast. I am writing to demand that the Newport Beach City
Council adopt a city budget that prioritizes community wellbeing, and redirects funding away from the police.
In 2020, the City of Newport Beach allocated 66.8 million dollars to our police system, an inordinate 31% of our total
budget. This is compared to just $12.6 million allocated towards community development. In addition, only $13 million
was allocated towards recreation and senior services. The proposed 2021 budget, increases the police fund by 1.46%,
while reducing the community development fund by 3.30% as well as reducing both the public works and recreation
funding.
I demand that the City Council begin meaningfully defunding the Newport Beach Police Department and re -allocate
those funds to programs proven to more effectively promote a safe and equitable community: community-based mental
health services, substance abuse treatment services, recreation projects, and more. I demand a budget that reflects the
actual needs of Newport Beach residents.
History has shown that police "reform" is not enough. We must take a hard look at the ways that the current system in
place fails to serve --and in fact actively harms --our community, and come together to reimagine the role of police in our
city.
Thank you for your time,

city's budget should reflect the tangible needs of residents. We must take a hard look at the ways that the current
system in place fails to serve our community, and work together to recreate and strengthen that system.

However, I believe that instead of increasing the police budget, this money could be better spent elsewhere. My parents
are slowly becoming seniors and I know that the OASIS senior center has been an important place in their life for the
past few years. I would like to see more money going into programs for seniors and children rather than going towards
increasing the police budget.
I would also like to see more money going towards community and mental health programs for the children and
residents of Newport Beach. I was extremely privileged to grow up here but yet I have to acknowledge the struggles that
I watched my friends go through while attending school here. It was grueling and cutthroat to say the least. It would
have been nice if there had been *free* after school programs that would have brought us closer together.
In spirit of the quarantine and everyone getting out into nature, I want to see more money going into recreation and
updating NB parks/trails rather than the Police force.
This is all to say that I don't advocate totally doing away with the police force. I admire them I really do. But they simply
don't need more money in a time like this. It's time to focus on programs that directly impact residents and their mental
well being. Rather than just their physical well being.
Thank you for your time,
Lauren Oberreiter

Dear Newport Beach City Council,
My name is julia David and I am a resident of Newport coast.
We must take a hard look at the ways that the current system in
place fails to serve --and in fact actively harms --our community, and come together to reimagine the role of police in our
city.

Dear Newport Beach City Council,
I am Alessandro Verniani, and I am a long time resident of East Bluff. I am writing today to respectfully implore the
Newport Beach City Council to adopt a budget which redirects funding from the police department and allocates money
to specialized programs that prioritize community wellbeing. I believe doing so would make the police department more
effective and would redirect calls related to the homeless, or residents with mental health problems, to proper health
professionals rather than police.
This year, the City allocated a third of its budget, or 66.8 million dollars, to the police system, and only $12.6 million
towards community development. In addition, only $13 million was allocated towards recreation and senior services.
The proposed 2021 budget increases the police funding by 1.46% while reducing the community development fund by
3.30%. It also reduces both the public works and recreation funding.
I strongly encourage the City Council to consider defunding the Newport Beach Police Department and re -allocate those
funds to programs proven to more effectively promote a safe and equitable community: community-based mental
health services, substance abuse treatment services, recreation projects, and more. This would allow police to focus on
law enforcement and allow Newport Beach residents to be treated with the proper care for a host of issues which the
police currently have to deal with.
Reform must reimagine the role of police in ensuring public safety while also protecting the dignity of people of color in
Newport Beach and the quality of life for all residents.
Thank you for your time,
Alessandro Verniani

and senior services. The proposed 2021 budget, increases the police fund by 1.46%, while reducing the community
development fund by 3.30% as well as reducing both the public works and recreation funding. I demand that the City
Council begin meaningfully defunding the Newport Beach Police Department and re -allocate those funds to programs
proven to more effectively promote a safe and equitable community: community-based mental health services,
substance abuse treatment services, recreation projects, and more. I demand a budget that reflects the actual needs of
Newport Beach residents. History has shown that police "reform" is not enough. We must take a hard look at the ways
that the current system in place fails to serve --and in fact actively harms --our community, and come together to
reimagine the role of police in our city. Thank you for your time,

Dear Newport Beach City Council,
My name is Macey Mullane and I am a resident of Newport Beach. I am writing to convince you to take funding away
from the Newport Beach Police Department.
In 2020, the City of Newport Beach allocated 66.8 million dollars to our police system, an inordinate 31% of our total
budget. This is an extremely large percentage of our budget that could be otherwise allocated to other areas like
community development. The low rate of crime in Newport Beach does not warrant this large of a percentage. The
proposed increase for this upcoming year is even less necessary. Please consider changing this year's budget in order to
reflect the actual needs of the Newport Beach community. These funds could be transferred to programs like those
mental health treatment, which is an extremely prominent issue across the country and definitely in Newport Beach.
It is not enough to just reform the police programs in the US, but further action is needed. I urge you to take another
look at the budget and the percentage that is allocated to the Newport Beach Police.
Thank you,

Dear Newport Beach City Council,
My name is Evan Sisk and I am a resident of District 3. 1 am writing to demand that the Newport Beach City Council
adopt a city budget that prioritizes community wellbeing, and redirects funding away from the police.
We must take a hard look at the ways that the current system in
place fails to serve --and in fact actively harms --our community, and come together to reimagine the role of police in our
city.
Thank you for your time,
Evan Sisk
