Trash Reduction Efforts 2017 - 2020 September 8, 2020

On 1/9/2020, the water quality committee approved the Trash and Toxics Reduction Ordinance, and
sent it to city attorney. It was the result of continuous research and discussions since 2017. And in
4/2018, we came up with this sign for restaurants.
On 9/3/2020, the water quality committee resumed meeting after six months. No update was given
on the status of the ordinance, and no comment to my public comment. Why?
"The City of Newport Beach has a duty to protect the natural environment, the economy, and the
health of its citizens." I used to think this line was about looking good. But during the years of working
on this ordinance, talking to various stakeholders, and observing other City work, I realized this is the
City's core value. Often, I'm touched - doing the right thing is not always popular, it takes courage.
We, including each councilmember, know that we will all answer for our actions someday.

Dear Mayor O'Neill and Council Members,
September is Coastal Cleanup Month and Restaurant Month in Newport Beach. The city has
been doing a great job supporting the restaurants. We should keep supporting them, but the
plastic crisis has only gotten worse since the pandemic started. Restaurant use of plastic needs
to be curtailed. Your leadership on this environmental and public health issue is needed now
more than ever. What better time to advance the WQ Committee trash reduction ordinance
passed several months ago than now, during Coastal Clean Up Month?
Thank you for taking up the WQ Committee recommendation as soon as possible, and thank
you for your service.

Please would the city council start enforcing its ordinance restricting the use of motorized scooters and bicycles along
this route?
It might be good to stop the bicycle stores by the Newport and Balboa Piers from renting out these machines.
They present a real,danger to safe use by pedestriansJoggers and non motorized bicycle users.
The use of motorized vehicles has increased significantly this year.

Hello,
They are bulldozing and sawing all the trees in the area. The city needs to take a second look at this project. There is a
full disregard for all the wildlife that lives in the canyon. They are now displaced and have no shelter going into the fall
and winter months. The construction starts at 7:00am along the airplanes from SNA airport. This has an enormous
impact on the wildlife, the residence of this community.
The airplanes are more toxic to the Back Bay, then the Brazilian Pepper trees. A few of us will be there for the non -
agenda issues at 6:00.
