After reviewing this proposed project adjacent to the park in the Port Streets neighborhood, I truly believe that it would be detrimental to the public safety and enjoyment of the existing community. The property is not well planned out and really not appropriate for that location. It would add much more congestion and traffic…and danger...to an already extremely busy area of the neighborhood. The two main reasons this project seems infeasible... 1) Adds to Congestion - The neighborhood exit nearest the condos/apts handles about 25-50% of ALL of the ingress/egress of the Port Streets community on a daily basis. In addition, existing activities at the park and soccer field closest to it bring more traffic and parking issues. It is impossible to imagine that adding so much additional housing and car trips would not add to that problem. Additionally, it seems there isn’t enough parking provided by the new complex to even accommodate their tenants, not to mention any guests who might visit. Where will that overflow end up if not on the streets or, even if prohibited, in the park parking lot. 2) Creates Dangerous Traffic Patterns/Situations - It is already dangerous at times for children/families in that area. Many children/teens use that area for the parks, soccer field or on their way to/from somewhere else (school, baseball fields, etc). We all try to be extra vigilant with so many children traveling through but children are unpredictable at times and more cars are not the answer to keeping them safe. Currently, if the children stay on the sidewalk in that area we can be relatively certain they won’t be run over, however the new complex creates a very busy driveway that would likely be crossed often by children on foot or bike, etc. My family members often run and bike in that area and I can only imagine how the extra car trips could impact them. Additionally, the entrance/exit of the new development does not seem that it can be made safe at all. How will drivers of cars/trucks coming in and out ever be able to see the cross traffic safely? Delivery trucks, especially, will end up backing up, either in or out, which would seem to be an accident waiting to happen if a child were to cross the path. This project seems to be a bad idea overall…and it doesn’t appear that it could be changed enough to make it safe enough for such a busy neighborhood. Please consider all of the people it will affect, especially those living nearby, before moving forward on this plan. At the very least, it would seem that an Environmental Impact Study would be prudent before putting so may people at risk. Thank you.
