To Newport Beach City Council Members:
I am a regular at the Newport Beach Library and always attend the lectures and talks that the
Foundation offers. In my opinion the lecture hall will be a wonderful addition and a great benefit
to the entire city not just the library. It will be a focal point that will create a dynamic civic center
experience along with the Civic Center park and the Sculpture garden. As we know, 15000 people
visit this library system per week. The Foundation's educational programs and the Library's
cultural activities make a positive economic impact for the city and this will be amplified by
an architecturally distinctive and fully functional Lecture Hall.
Please give your approval to the construction of this hall.
Thank you,
Latika Sethi

Subject: Newport Beach Public Library Lecture Hall
Dear Mayor Avery & City Council Members Dixon, Duffield, Muldoon, Blom, Brenner & O'Neill,
I am writing to you today regarding the Lecture Hall for the Newport Beach Public Library
As an attendee of the WITTE LECTURE SERIES for 24 years and as chair of the WITTE LECTURE SERIES Committee I implore you to
support the creation of a useful, contemporary, state of the art lecture hall that can seat our sold out audiences.
To date, the WITTE LECTURE SERIES has brought to the wider Newport Beach community over 100 lectures by nationally and
internationally recognized authors, artists and thought leaders. In conjunction with these stimulating lectures, we have offered the
community at large an opportunity to gather, share, question and discuss the content of these stimulating lectures. The WITTE
LECTURE SERIES is a distinguished event in our community. All of these lectures have taken place in the Friend's Room at the library.
The room, although generous in size, accommodates only 200 guests. The lighting allows little control, the seating offers limited
sight lines, the AV is rudimentary and there is no comfortable room for our speakers to use for privacy and thought gathering before
the event.
Many of the volunteer WITTE COMMITTEE have been involved in the design of our dream hall fore over 7 years. The designs have
been thought through, the location designated and sources for part of the funding have been part of our conversation. It is time for
Newport to create this asset which will be eagerly used by the community.
Recently, the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation engaged a new CEO, Jerold Kappel. Jerry has brought to the Foundation a
level of professionalism and experience that is a joy to behold. He has quickly grasped the potential of the Foundation and the
importance of the Lecture Hall. Below are his key points of value and necessity for the Lecture Hall to be constructed.
The Library Lecture Hall will be a benefit to the entire city and its community organizations
It will be an architectural focal point that will add to the Civic Center, Library, Civic Center Park, and Sculpture
Garden campus to create a dynamic community and civic center experience
15,000 people a week visit our library system from all across the region. Through the Foundation's educational
programs and the Library's cultural activities there is a positive economic impact for the city that will only be
amplified by a vibrant, architecturally distinctive, and fully functional Lecture Hall
I look forward to our first lecture held in this distinctive and functional facility.
Sincerely,
Janet S. Hadley
