Box Y Newn rt Beach, California 92663 Attention: Mr. Dubby E-nins Director of Architecture & Planning Gentlemen: Founiation Soil inspection Pro sed Temporary Foundation 301 Pad (Our Job No. 8-85146-8) As requested, we have inspected the exposed soils ,for support of the concrete foundation pad which will be used as a temporary location of a mobil MJtl trailer. A permanent MRI facility will soon be under construction at another area of the hospital facility (our Job No. B-86155). Our professional services have been performed using that degree of care and skill ordinarily exercised, under similar circumstances, by reputable geotechnical engineers practicing in this or similar local- ities. No other warranty, expressed or implied, is made as to the professional opinions included in this report. The proposed foundation pad will consist of a concrete slab 13x50 feet in planned dimension and 15 inches thick. It will support a trailer with an estimated weight of 52,000 pounds. The trailer will be stabilized by the use of leveling jacks. The maximum soil pressure under the proposed slab is estimated to be less than 600 pounds per square foot. The new foundation pad will be located, in a paved area between Hospital Road and the existing power plant. The site is generally! B-85146-B level; however, the southerly end of the construction area is adjacent to the top of a 2:1 (horizontal to vertical) slope which is some 8 to 10 feet in height. After the asphalt paving was removed within the proposed founda- tion area, approximately 6 inches of subgrade soil was excavated and replaced with imported Class 2 base material. The base material was compacted and the material was tested by our representative with results in excess of 95% compaction. Prior to placing of the base material, our representative examined a- ; probed the exposed subgrade soils beneath the proposed pad. The subgrac soils appec.r to be fill material which were generally firm except at t:..: extreme south end of the foundation pad, immediately adjacent to the top of the slope. The softer soils at the top of the slope were removed to a depth of some five feet below the bottom of the proposed foundation pad. The overexcavation was backfilled with com- pacted and imported Class 2 base. The overexcavated area was also extended sufficiently beyond the origins?. top of slope to provide a sufficient level area for a 7' wide sidewalk. The sidewalk will be used for access to the trailer. The subgrade soils underlying the compacted base materials are fill soils for which there is no available compaction data. Con- sequently, it is possible that some settlement could occur within these soils which could result in some minor settlement of the -proposed foundation pad. However, the trailer which is proposed to be stored on the pad is essentially an independent unit. It will be supported on leveling jacks which will provide both stability and a method'' for maintaining the trailer in a level position. In addition, we understand that the trailer may be moved periodically and that Hthe.. use of the foundation pad will generally be of limited duration, while there is some possibility of minor settlement' occurring, theihospital is aware of this possibility and is willing to take the responsibility of any con- sequences due to the settlement. Based on the intended use of the foundation pad, and the capa- bility of being able to relevel the trailer on the pad,' we believe that the foundation soil conditions are adequate for the intended purpose. We suggest that the area adjacent to the foundation pad and the access sidewalk be paved or that the adjacent ground surface be graded to minimize moisture filtration into the underlying soils. In addition, the area adjacent to the pad and sidewalk thouldl be monitored" on a routine basis to determine if corrective procedures are necessary.; The hospital has indicated an understanding of the potential for maintenance. and is willing to accept the responsibility for the performance of this temporary facility. B-SS146-E We will be pleased to be available to work with the hospital staff in evaluating the performance of the foundation pad and .providing maintenance recommendations, if desired.
