TO ARTS COMMISSIONERS REGARDING AGENDA ITEM “ECHO BEACH
SHOWING” – CAC MEETING MAY 12, 2022
For those of you who may not know, the beach area between 52nd and 56th Streets is
known as “Echo Beach”, where much of the 1980s surf movement took place. Most if
not all here are fully aware of how popular the sport of surfing is here in Newport Beach.
No doubt many of us have family members who surf or did during their more youthful
years; I did.
Jeff Parker happens to be a friend of mine. He approached Will O’Neill over one year
ago, while he was Mayor and I was Chair of the CAC about his desire to produce a
sequel to his film “Echo Beach”, and was seeking funding. Will referred Jeff to me,
thinking perhaps Jeff could apply for a Cultural Arts Grant. Of course, I had to explain
that he did not fit the eligibility guidelines to apply for a grant.
This encounter with Jeff peaked my interest in trying to find a way for the CAC and Jeff
to collaborate in some type of surf event for the community, that would showcase his
film, “Echo Beach” and raise awareness of how surf’s popularity helped to shape the
culture and commerce here in Newport Beach as well as other coastal cities throughout
Orange County; it’s all history!
Through meetings with Tim, Camille, Chair Greer, Secretary Flanigan, Jeff Parker and
myself, we came up with the idea of a small venue as Director Hetherton described in
today’s Agenda report.
Chair Greer, Secretary Flanigan, Staff and I all feel a surf event would be well received
by our community and be a draw for all ages from children to adults. If we follow through
with this event and it is successful, perhaps we could consider a larger more formal
events such as this in the future.
• The film is about 52 minutes long
• Perhaps the CAC could provide complimentary light tray pass hors d’oeuvres
and nonalcoholic beverages in the main library Bamboo Courtyard a 45 mins.
prior to the film showing and popcorn available as people gather inside for the
film, then possibly cookies afterwards in the Bamboo Courtyard.
• Funds raised from a surfboard raffle would go to the NBAF for the benefit of the
CAC.
• We could possibly have a surf trivia questions session with giveaways after the
film, if sponsors donated surf items.
• Jeff could ask ‘M Phase”, who produced the sound track for “Echo Beach” to
provide music before and after the film, but we would have to see what that
would cost.
• I would like to invite a surf photographer to exhibit in the main library lobby
gallery that would be on display during timeline of this event.
These are just some of my ideas and of course we would form an ad hoc subcommittee
for this event. In any case, I feel this would be a great event for us to provide for our
community.
