Observations from the 2022 Coastal Fire

Neighborhood fuel modification landscape was in good condition.
No red flag warnings were issued for the day; on -shore winds present.
Flames did not contact the homes; but there was significant embers
generated by the wildfire, showering homes in the community.

Evidence showed several homes wed damaged or destroyed from the
interior. Field inspection showed 1/4" screens invents in homes
OW throughout the community.

Recommendations For Council Consideration
Staff recommends that the upcoming Fire and Building Codes for 2023
be locally amended to require the following:
➢ All structures in the Very High Fire Severity Zone (VHFSZ) have�vents with
1/8"mesh screens or vents meeting Chapter 7A of the building codes,
amortized over 3 years
➢ All structures in the VHFSZ have a 5-foot wide filre resistive zone at the base
of the structure, with no combustible materials within 18" of the structure,
amortized over 3 years
➢ The NBFD plant palette forfire resistant vegetation be implemented for all
properties located within the VHFSZ, not just for wildland interface areas
