As permitted in CBC 104.11, the purpose of this letter is to request the use of an alternative material, design and method of construction for the two-story corridor openings on the project. ub'ect: Per 712.1.9, two-story openings are permitted under certain conditions. The project has an R-2 corridor with a storefront lobby area. The preferred design is to create a two-story volume space at the first to second level along the corridor to allow more natural light and view to the exterior. Discussion: A fire rated curtain is proposed in order to provide the required rating and close the opening between the two-story areas. • Per 707.6, openings in a fire barrier for an exit passageway are only as permitted by 1024.5. o Section 1024.5 requires that openings in an exit passageway be limited to those necessary for exit access. Therefore, the opening in the two-story volume space will provide the equivalency of a fire barrier wall. • Per 707.7.1, penetrations into a fire barrier for an exit passageway are only as permitted by 1024.6. • Per 703.2 fire -resistance assemblies are to be rated as determined by the testing procedures in ASTM E119 or UL 263. o The Dual Hose Stream 120 fire curtain is ASTM E119 listed and labeled for 2 hour. • The area where the fire curtain occurs will normally be open. o The fire curtain has an automatic closing feature. o The fire curtain will close upon fire alarm and or fire sprinkler activation. Conclusion: In our opinion, the use of a fire curtain such as the Dual Hose Stream 120 or equal meets and exceeds the opening protection requirements for the two-story opening that requires a fire barrier wall. When an alarm signal is detected, the Control Panel (CP) will automatically trigger the shutter systems to deploy in a controlled descent under gravity. In normal operating conditions the CP provides AC supply to the Motor Controller (MC) to keep the shutters in retracted condition. Should smoke he detected, the fire alarm control system will send a signal to the CP and the shutters will deploy at a controlled speed to their operational position. When the fire alarm system goes back to normal power mode, the shutters will automatically retract hack to the housing.
