The proposed roll down when closed will provide more than the 20 minute opening protection rating listed in CBC Table 716.1(2) and will exceed equivalent protection at the opening during a fire. The project has an R-2 corridor with a storefront lobby area. The preferred design is to create a two-story volume space at the third to fourth level along the corridor to allow more natural light and view to the exterior. Discussion: A fire rated curtain is proposed in order to provide the required rating and close the opening between the two-story areas. • Section 708.6 states that openings in a fire partition are to be protected in accordance with 716. • Per Table 716.1(2) the opening protection would be required to be 20 minutes with a D-20 label or 20 minute rated. o A fire curtain will provide the rating with the required label. • Table 716.1(1) requires that this label complies with NFPA 252 or UL 10B or UL 10C. o The CiHRS fire curtain is compliant with UL 10B and IOC. o The C1HRS fire curtain is listed with Cal Fire under listing number 4077-2312:0501. • The area where the fire curtain occurs will normally be open. o The fire curtain has an automatic closing feature. o The fire curtain will close upon fire alarm and or fire sprinkler activation. Conclusion: In our opinion, the use of a fire curtain such as the DSI-ClHR (C1HRS) or equal meets and exceeds the opening protection requirements for the two-story opening.
