The fire curtain will provide the equivalent of a 1 hr Fire Barrier as an Occupancy Separation between the R2 and M occupancies in accordance with CBC Table 508.4 and CBC section 707. 3 JUSTIFICATION/FINDINGS OF EQUIVALENCY: CODE SECTIONS: 508.4, 707.6 The proposed fire rated roll down curtain will be tied to the fire alarm and fire suppression systems to automatically close in the event of an emergency. Standby Emergency Power will be provided per CEC Article 700.12. The proposed roll down curtain, Door Systems model DSI-C3HRM, will provide the equivalent of the required 1 hour wall rating and will provide equivalent Fire Barrier Wall protection at the opening during a fire. The project has an R-2 corridorthat connects to an M breezeway area. The preferred design is to maintain an opening between the two areas. Discussion: A fire rated curtain is proposed in orderto provide the required opening protection within a 1 hourfire barrier at separated occupancies. • Per 508.4.4.1 an occupancy separation is to be constructed as a fire barrier in accordance with 707. • Per707.6, the protection for an opening in a fire barrier should be in accordance with 716. Also, per707.6 exception 1, opening size is not limited due to the project having an automatic sprinkler system per 903.3.1.1. Per Table 716.1(2) the opening protection would be required to be 45 minutes with a D-H label. o A fire curtain will provide the rating with the required label. • Table 716.1(1) requires thatthe D-H label complies with NFPA 252 or UL 10B or UL 10C. o The C3HRM fire curtain is compliant with UL 10B and 10C. o The C31-IRM fire curtain is listed with Cal Fire under listing number4077-2312:0501. • The area where the fire curtain occurs will normally be open. o The fire curtain has an automatic closing feature. o The fire curtain will close upon fire alarm and or fire sprinkler activation. Conclusion: In our opinion, the use of a 3 hour fire curtain such as the DSI-C3HRM (C3HRSM) or equal meets and exceeds the opening protection requirements forthe occupancy separation.
