Re: Foundation Report for July 17, 2023, Meeting
______________________________________________________________________________________________________
FINANCE
1. I anticipate changes to the final FY2023 financials once it has been audited. The audit is
scheduled to start by the end of July. Beginning with the FY2021 Audit and IRS Form 990,
the public versions of the Audit and 990 are available on the Foundation’s website once
accepted by the Foundation Board of Directors. https://nbplf.foundation/about/financial‐
responsibility/
2. It is projected that after the audit the FY 2023 revenue will show a strong 12‐13%
increase over FY 2022, largely due to increased contributed revenue. There was no
increase in earned revenue from the Witte Lectures or Library Live.
3. The Foundation’s overall expenses increased by 6%, in line with inflation.
4. The Foundation’s net operating revenue for the fiscal year is $36,000. The board‐
approved budget for FY 2023 reflected a $57,000 deficit.
5. The Foundation provided a grant of $39,980 for items requested by the Library Director,
Melissa Hartson.
6. The Lecture Hall account at Schwab is currently $2.865 million. There have not been
significant gifts to the Hall in the past 30 days. The endowment is at $2.970 million after
the rebalance for the Library grant.
7. The Foundation expended $54,475 in free programming for the Library in FY2023 and
contributed $23,800 in expenses for the capital campaign for Witte Hall, a Library building
project.
a. Witte and Library Live expenses totaled $209,176.
GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
1. The summer intern for marketing, programs, and donor research during Kunga’s leave
is a UCI graduate, Dominique Cojuancgo. She began the last week of June.

Newport Beach Public Library Foundation

2. Key Library policies on Use of Library, Collections, Displays, Expressive Use Areas and
Children in the Library were included in the Foundation Board meeting packet. Board
members were asked to refer to the policies when responding to inquiries from the
public. All Library policies can be found on the Library’s website
https://www.newportbeachlibrary.org/about/library‐policies
a. The Board’s Governance Committee will also serve as the Foundation’s
advocacy committee, monitoring issues that may arise regarding the Library,
researching issues, and crafting responses. The Governance Committee is
chaired by Immediate Past Chair Karen Clark and its members are Antonella
Castro and Walter Stahr.
b. Please note that the CEO, Jerold Kappel, is the official spokesperson for the
Foundation.
3. The PAL Board meeting was on July 11 to consider the proposal to transfer its reserve
funds to the Foundation. The Foundation’s proposal was presented to the PAL Board
on June 7.
4. There will be no Foundation Board Meeting in August.
EVENTS and PROGRAMMING
1. All the programs for next year have been scheduled and dates secured with the Library.
All Library Live and Witte speakers are contracted. All fall Medicine in Our Backyard
topics and speakers have been set. All Financial Literacy topics have been identified. All
Book Discussion Group books are selected.
2. Spotlight on Science has three presentations scheduled and budgeted. A programming
committee met on July 11 to identify subjects and speakers. These will be set by the first
week of August to begin marketing for the first presentation on November 15.
3. Witte and Library Live committees are on hiatus until next September.
MARKETING
1. Bookmark was mailed and is posted on the website
https://nbplf.foundation/archives/bookmark‐archives/ . In addition to being mailed
directly to Foundation members, it is distributed throughout the Library branches, Oasis,
City Hall, and to other community organizations.
a. I direct the Trustees to the article on page 18 of Bookmark on the impact of
volunteerism for the Library—a monetary value of at least $714,756.
2. Dominique is developing social media. The design and content are excellent.
a. The goal is to have 3 social media posts a week and maintain that level of
engagement.
3
b. The general theme of the social media for the summer is “Were you there”
focusing on our past speakers and their recent accomplishments. The next
focus will be on the Legacy Campaign.
3. Season passes for Witte Lectures and Library Live went on sale to members only on July 1.
There was an immediate response. To date, Library Live has sold 52 passes for 25% of the
house, and Witte has sold 74 passes for 18% of total seats.
DEVELOPMENT
1. As reported previously, the Foundation is initiating a legacy campaign (estate giving)
effort in concert with the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Central Library. Named
The Elizabeth and John Stahr Legacy Society, it honors those who have left an estate gift
to the Foundation and those who have stated the intent to provide one in the future.
Additional information can be found on the Foundation’s website
https://nbplf.foundation/estate‐giving/
a. The Foundation received its first gift for the Stahr Legacy Society, a $50,000
gift to the endowment. In transmitting the gift to the Foundation from the
Carol Beitscher Trust, her daughter, Felicia Siegel wrote, “My mom was as
avid reader as well as a huge advocate and utilizer of the public library
system. She came from modest means in Brooklyn NY and understood the
need for public service and resources, especially when it came to education
and reading. She was proud that her circumstances later in life allowed her
to give back to the community. I know she would be honored to be part of
the Newport Beach Library Legacy program.”
2. I had a substantive meeting with key staff of the Orange County Community Foundation.
I spoke mostly about the Library and its excellence. The staff was very interested in the
Literacy program, so I sent them brochures and a booklet.
3. The Library Leadership Reception for next fall is scheduled for October 4. Because of the
delay in construction of Witte Hall, it will be in the Bamboo Courtyard.
4. There was an article in the Newport Beach Magazine on the Foundation and Witte Hall. It
prompted a potential donor to come to the Foundation office inquiring about the project
and a 7‐figure contribution is under negotiation.
5. Rebids for the Witte Hall construction are scheduled to be released in early September,
confirmed by Dave Webb at his presentation to the CdM Chamber on Thursday, July 13.
6. The nascent association of library foundations and development staff, the Library
Support Network, meets monthly and recently had a national conference that I was
unable to attend. It should be noted that the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation is
the only support organization (institutionally‐related foundation) I have found that has
an active programming component.
