Re: Library Foundation Report
1. Mireya Llaurado, an attorney, and Senior Counsel with Call & Jensen, has been elected
to the Board of Directors. Antonella Castro has been appointed to the Library Trustees,
and she no longer serves on the Foundation Board.
2. Season Pass marketing: Season Passes for both Witte Lecture Series (second year)
and Library Live (first year) have exceeded goals. Currently, there are 108 passes sold
for Library Live, 60% of the available seats for sale. There have been 138 Witte Lecture
Series season passes sold, or 38% of the available seats for the two lectures.
a. Although the capacity of the Friends Room is 200, because of major donor
complimentary tickets and speaker guests, the Foundation identifies the number of
potential tickets to be sold as 180 per event.
2. Library Live single tickets went on sale Labor Day weekend, and both Lisa See and
Steve Lopez are sold out. Individual Witte tickets go on sale November 1.
3. The October Board Meeting of the Library Foundation is Monday, October 9, 2023, at
5:00 PM.
a. The Library Live Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month and the Witte
Committee meets on the first Thursday. Both committees have met and are
planning for the 2024-2025 season.
4. The Library Leadership Reception will be held on Wednesday, October 4, from 5:00-7:00
PM in the Bamboo Courtyard.
a. All Trustees are on the invitation list. Others invited are the Foundation’s Library
Leadership Circle donors, the City Council, the City Manager and Assistant
Manager, the Police and Fire Chief, the elected leaders that represent Newport
Beach in County, State, and national offices, the Library staff leadership, and
local civic and media leaders.

b. The special guest for the evening is Greg Lucas, the California State Librarian.
5. National Estate Planning Awareness Week begins October 16. That week will be the
launch to the Foundation’s estate giving program for the Elizabeth and John Stahr
Legacy Society in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Central Library.
a. The Foundation has contracted FreeWill to provide free Planned Giving
documents to our members on the Foundation website. The free will document
that is provided is California approved. FreeWill is utilized by hundreds of
nonprofits, large and small, including dozens of library foundations.
b. The Foundation has already developed a webpage for Estate Giving with
documents available for those individuals that already have an advisor and an

6. The Foundation will present 44 programs during the 2023-2024 season, 32 of which are
free to the public.
7. The Spotlight on Science programs will start on November 15 with a presentation by UCI
professor Padhraic Smith, Ph.D., on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on scientific
research.
a. The March 20 speakers will be Eric Rignot, a, world-renowned glaciologist who
studies the effects of global climate change on polar ice sheets and Isabella
Velicogna, also a UCI Physical Sciences professor and researcher. The third
presenter (May 15) is being interviewed the week of October 18.
8. The first Book Discussion Group on Wednesday, September 11 was attended by 55
people discussing Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See, the first Library Live
speaker. The discussion was led by Patricia Dreyfus, the co-chair of the Library Live
committee. The Book Discussion Group meets in the Friends Room the second Monday

9. Medicine in Our Backyard begins on Monday, September 25, and will continue October

10. The Financial Literacy Workshops begin Monday October 2 for six straight weeks.

11. Library Live will have two presentations in the Fall—Thursday, October 19 with Lisa See

13. Bookmark is scheduled for an early November publication date and will focus on the
30th anniversary of Central Library, the Foundation’s role in advocating for it and
funding 25% of its cost and insuring its future with a Legacy Campaign.
14. The second round of bids for the Library Lecture Hall—Witte Hall—were released on
Plant Bid on September 5. The bids are to be opened in October and sent to the City
Council in November.
a. The Foundation’s Beyond Books capital campaign is still progressing.
