fighting cancer after he beat lung cancer in 1964; and
"ERAS, Wr. Wayne's family honored his memory by creating the John Wayne Cancer Foundation
in 1985. The mission of the John Wayne Cancer Foundation is to Lead the fight against cancer with
courage, strength and grit by funding novel and innovative programs that improve cancer patients'
outcomes and save fives through research, education, awareness, and support; and
WEREAS, one speck initiative is a youth skin cancer education and awareness program caffed Block
the Braze; and
T.HEREAS, Bfockthe Braze encourages youth to be outdoors, active, and heafthy while focusing on sun
safety, including skin cancer prevention and early detection; and
TVIfEMEAS, Brock the Braze is the official partner of the California Surf Lifesaving Association
bringing education, hats, and sunscreen each summer to over 1,400 Newport Beach ,junior Lifeguards
and an additionaf22, 000 Calfornia junior ffeguards; and
�WEW�EAS, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation hires 6 Block the Braze summer interns each year,
which has included alumni of the .Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program; and
`W3WEREAS, the John Wayne Cancer Foundation donated $25, 000 to the Newport Beach ,junior
Lifeguard.7feadquarters as a sign of its commitment to the future of program here in Newport Beach; and
Zl�'3fEREAS, to date, Brock the Blaze has educated over 632, 000 youth on sun safety and skin cancer
prevention.
