1. INTRODUCTION
a) This letter provides our geotechnical evaluation for the pool and spa construction
at the subject property located in the city of Newport Beach, California.
b) We have visited the site to observe the existing conditions. At the time of our
visit, the pool and spa excavations had already been made. The depths of the
excavation range from 3 to 7 feet below ground surface. The edges of the
excavation are situated approximately 2 to 3 feet from the southwest -lying
property line wall (6-foot high freestanding block wall) and a corner of the
existing house.
C) The sidewalls of the excavations were observed to generally expose 2 feet of fill
material overlying dense Silty SAND/Sandy SILT native soils. It is our
understanding that the excavation has been exposed for a period of at least one
week. No distress was currently observed along the nearby property line wall or
building structure. No sloughing or caving of the excavation sidewalls was noted.
d) This letter provides results of our observation of the pool excavation. We were not
requested to provide the design recommendations or the impact of the existing
structures on to the pool walls or vice versa.

2. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
a) Based on our recent observations, the cuts are currently considered to be grossly
stable and, therefore, no shoring is required. The cuts, however, should not be left
open for an extended period of time. It is recommended that the pool/spa be
gunited as soon as possible. The bottoms of the excavations aredeemed suitable
for the intended construction.
b) It should be noted that certain amount of cracking or tilting in the pool is
unavoidable. Such effects should be anticipated during the lifetime of the existing
and the proposed structures.
