Discovery Cube Honored with National Medal of Service Award Since 1994, the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has been awarding the National Medal of Service* to libraries and museums around the nation for educational impact and service to the community. Discovery Cube was the first science center from California to be awarded with this distinguished honor. In May 2013, Discovery Cube was announced as one of five museum recipients for the 2013 National Medal. First Lady Michelle Obama presided over the ceremony in the East Room of The White House, presenting the medal to Joe Adams, President and CEO of Discovery Science Foundation. *Medal winners are selected from nationwide nominations of institutions that demonstrate innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach. Our Mission is to inspire and educate young minds through engaging science- based programs and exhibits to create a meaningful impact on the communities we serve. Our Mission Advance STEM engagement through the creation of another immersive learning space for children, families and the community in Newport Beach… Discovery Cube’s Ocean Quest Our Vision •Field trips are available at various age bands •Kinder through 2nd grade •3rd through 5th grade •6th through 8th grade •High School Field Trip •Field trips are designed with the grade standards of each grade level in mind Field Trip Details •Field trips include: •An educational boat cruise through Newport Bay •Hands on science activities associated with the marine environment •Time in the seasonal exhibit space •Scientific investigation at the Balboa Pier •Activities and topics include: •Local marine life both in the Harbor and off the coast •Entities that are within the Harbor •Sheriffs Dept, Coast Guard, Narwhal Vessel, the jetties, the Balboa Pavilion •Discuss their importance in the Harbor as well as their history Field Trip Details •Plankton Races •Discusses the importance of plankton as the base of the food chain •Various engineering activities •Pier/beach activities •Crab catch and sand examination •Grants from the Hoag Foundation and Marisla Foundation •Program with various partners that enable students to participate in real life studies •Data Collection: •Surfrider: Blue Water Task Force (Water quality/bacteria testing.) •USC Urban Tides: (collected during field trips or during “events” such as King Tides) •MPA Watch: Simple survey. In addition, students will investigate renewable energy sources and perform tests associated with structural integrity, speed and efficiency. Environmental Engineering – 4th through 12th Grade •Students investigate the effect of urbanization on our environment and learn how eco-friendly planning and construction can work in harmony with (and contribute to) the environment. Students will examine storm water pollution and design structures, including green rooftops and permeable pavement, to minimize environmental impact. Underwater Robotics – 6th through 12th Grade •Student will apply engineering practices while working in teams to construct and underwater, remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) that can perform a variety of tasks, such as retrieving underwater objects. Innovation Showcase – 4th through 12th Grade •Students participate in hands-on engineering projects centered on harnessing and controlling energy (light and motion) to gain skills needed to create their own innovative project. Explorations include: circuits, deconstructing and building motors, designing switches and open-ended, student-driven projects.
