Concrete finish retaedant for washed surfaces: l. Vertical or formed surf,.ce retarder: Formed aggregate retarder as manufactured by Nox~Crete Chem. of Cerritos, Ca;lifornia, or equal. 2. Flatwork surface retarder: Manufactured by L, M. Scofield Co .• Los Angeles, or equal. Patching mortar, one part Portland cement or equal (part gray adjusted to match color of surrounding concrete) and with the least water required to produce a workable mass. tar until it is the stiffest consistency that will permit E X £ C O T t O N SIJBGRADE PREPARATION white and part 2-1/2 parts sand Rework this =r-placing. A. Construct the subgrade true to grade and detail as shown on either the Landscape or Civil plans. B. For expansive soils, roll or hand tamp subgrade to between 85\ and 921 of maximum density to· a depth of one foot. For pool decks or other concrete slab areas make moisture ceintent 140\ of optimum to a depth of 18 inches. For walkways make =isture content of soil llO\ of optimum to a depth of 12 inches. C. For non-e~pansive or mildly expansive soils ce,mpaet subgr!de to 901 maxi- mum density at optimum 1110isture content. D. Prior to pouring concrete for pool decks and other concrete slab areas, call the Owner's soil engineer for approval of subgrade compaction and =isture ce,ntent. Give th(' soil engineer a minimum 24 hours notice prior to insp~ctton time. ~he soil engineer's fee will be paid by the Contractor, POlt>!:lNC A. Set forms with uppe{ edges true to line ;ind_grade._ Remove side fqr_!ll_s_not ■ooner than 12 hours after finishing has been completed. ■. Form curves so that there are no abrupt offsets or jogs at points of tan- gency. secure Landscape Architect's or Landscape Coordinator's approval of form alignment both horizontally and vertically prior to pouring and make nece:!lsary adjustments to conform to plans and details. c. Where forms adjoin eKisting concrete, the transition shall be smooth and even in both alignment and in horizontal plane. D. Embedded items: Install wcrk built into concrete such a11 sleeve:!!, anchor bolts, wood nailers, reglets, frames and sleeves for piping, conduit and fittings. Provide facilities and supervision required for installation of inserts specified under other sections and perform cutting and reinforcing of forms required to accon-.odate them. Do not place any concrete until all inserted items are Jnstalled in their proper locations, secured against dlsplace~ent, cleaned, inspected and approved, Set such items according to approved shop dr,.wings and setting plans. Furnish tles and supports necessary to k~ep items in place when concrete is placed. CONCRETE INST'1-LLATION A, Con:!ltruct concrete work to ce,nform to plans and details. B. weather: Do not pla;ce concrete 1uring rain unless approved measures are taken to prevent damage to concrete. Cure concrete placed during periods of dty winds, low humidity, high temperatures. and other conditions causing rapid drying, initially with a fine fog spray of water applied i=erli,.tely after finishin~ and mainta;ined until final curing operations are begun. P. Test surface as work progresses and eliminate high or low spots. Smoo~h gradient transitions are required. G. Tolerances: Cement finish shall be true in line, plane and elevations as shown. Finished concrete slab surfaces shall not deviate from a flat plane more than 1/6" when tested with a lo foot stra;ight edge held in any direc- tion. Furnish and maintain in good condition a 10 foot straight edge for use by the Landscape Architect or Landscape Coordinator. H. Defective finish: Any slab showing a gre,.ter variation than the Sp<ocified 1/s•, showing voids or separation of the aggregates, or showing a texture in variance to the plans shall be diemed defective and th'-' entire slab shall be re=ved and replaced with concrete acceptable to the Landscape Architect or Landscape Coordinator at the Contractor's expense. A. Finish all surf,.ces to peesent a uniform appearance throughout the aee" involved, and throughout adjacent areas with the same treatment. L.ocations of required finish shall be as indicated on plans. B. Where finishing occurs adjacent to finished metal or other finished sur- faces, particularly where serrated or indented,-re=ve a11-traces ot" Cement fllJn before it hardens. This applie:!I particularly to stair nosings and similar items. C. Steel trowel: After concrete is sufficiently hardened to prevent drawing n-.olsture and fines to the surfa;ce, trowel in 2 operations. Perform first operation with a power rotary trowel until matrix no longer accumulates on the trowel. Do not use cement, sand or a mixture thereof to absorb excess n-.:,istut"e and do not add water to facilit;ite trowelinq. Perform second troweling until theee is II distinct ringing sound under the trowel and a smooth, hard burnished surface is obtained. Use liquid curing membrane. D. Sweat, After first steel tro...,ling, use a hand tro...,1 in a circuhr, lift- ing motion, forming a slightly roughened te,iture. Use liquid curing mem- brane. E. Broomed: After floating, dra;w broom across the surfa;ee at right angle to flow of traffic producing a uniform non-skid surface. For light broom finish, use a fiber broom, leaving depressions approximately 1/16" deep. For heavy broom finish, use " co,.rse broom leaving depressions approximately 1/8" de('p. l.lse liquid curing membrane. F. Roe~ salt texture: After first steel troweling, spread a uniformly distri- buted layer of rock salt evenly graded from 3/16" to J/B-. Roll to embed salt and perform final steel trOW!!,ling. After ce,nerete ha;s hardened, com- pletely remove salt with a water stream. Insure that water and salt do not contaminate soil intended for landscaping. Pitted areas shall cover 1S-20 percent of the area or match approved sample. Use liquid curing ~em- brane. G. Color concrete: As shown on plan, Apply as per manufacturer's recommenda- tions. CURING A. Commence curing as soon as feasibl"' after finishing without marring surfaces, "nd in any case on same day. B. Paper curing, Exeept as otherwise specified, use concrete curing paper only, joints sealed with pressure-sensitive tape) immediately repair "ny tears during curing period. Verify that surfaces remain damp for full curing period: if necessary, lift paper and wet surf.lees with clean water, and re- place paper. C. Liquid curing compound: Do not apply on any surface to receive retardant, 1110rtar, or any other material adhered by bond, except as otherwise specified. Carefully mask and protect adjoining surfaces where compound is used. 1. FUgitive dye compound: Sub)ect to approval, may he usen where no Qth<>r finish or matedal is to be ap,ilied, AS™ C309, clear, Type l, D. Curing period and protection, Maintain curing mediums in proper sealed con- dition for minimum of ten fl0J nays after application. Keep traffic on cur- ing surfaces to minimum po:!!slble,·and completely off liquid compound cured surfaces. Immediately <('Store any damaged or defective curing media. E. Curing formed surfaces: Keep wet, wood forms left in place during final curing period. If forms are removed during curing period, apply one of f-------------··---~~ specified curing methods immediately and continue for remaindP.t of curing period. CLEAN UP A. Pick up all trash resulting from this wcrk at least on the last working day each week. At completion, ren-.ove all trash completely from the site. __ !
