There has been interest and enthusiasm for the event since its inception in 1947. The number of sailors who race to Ensenada over and over again —some for 20 and many for 30 or more times -attest to the continuing attraction of the event as do the scores of people you see wearing the famous red Mt Gay Rum hats with the year of the race embroidered on them. The theme of the 2012 race was "Wanna Race ?" to emphasize our efforts to highlight the excitement surrounding the race. This combined with a renewed emphasis on the Cruising Class is in line with our effort to generate excitement and rebuild participation. We have also vastly increased our use of social media in order to remain relevant to a new generation of sailors. Newport Beach, a great destination city, is also the ideal starting location for the race. It offers a wide array of lodging, great harbor facilities with available pubic moorings as well as hospitable yacht dubs, a wide array of hotels, great restaurants and wonderful shopping opportunities and is the perfect opportunity to get whatever you need foryour boat. Ensenada is a great international destination and a wonderful and safe place to spend time_ The city is constantly upgrading and has many fine hotels and restaurants including the Hotel Coral, our destination hotel. Forthose who come down early or just come down to support the racers, there is a wine region nearby and there are many magnificent tours available. The downtown area has a huge fish market and many food stalls nearby which offer fresh fish in all its guises including the ubiquitous fish taco. There are many fine restaurants available in the downtown area as well. Anyone who has sailed the race knows of the challenge of sailing in the world's largest International Yacht Race and the excitement of seeing so many sailing friends and, just as important, renewing all the wonderful friendships we have made over the years in Ensenada. The NOSH board of directors encourages all who can participate in the race, to enter and encourage friends, and even not -so- friends, to join in the fun in Newport Beach and in Ensenada and help keep this wonderful tradition alive and well. b d Sb8lbEbblL uolinoN filer The 66h Annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race meets and exceeds the city's criteria. 1. The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is the world's largest international sailing regatta and positions the City of Newport Beach as one of the best and most exciting places to visit, live, work, play and sail. The race attracts participants from around the world and creates vast international media attention, globally, nationally and locally. Millions of impressions will be generated from national magazines, regional television, social media and press coverage. We expect this year's race to generate over $350,000 in media and public relations value. Opportunities for the City's exposure and hospitality include visibility through signage and special events surrounding the pre-events. Lastyearthe city officials hosted several Mexican dignitaries prior to the race and other associated events. The allotted three months of pre -event publicity and activities within the city will generate vast recognition for the City of Newport Beach and promote its hospitality. 2. Hosting the 66"' Annual Newport Beach to Ensenada Yacht Race creates an exciting sense of civic pride. Not only does the race involve residents and businesses alike but it creates a destination forthe world to see as a premier city. In addition it creates a clientele with increased income to shop and dine in local area businesses. 3. In April of 2013 the Race will celebrate two- thirds of a century of operation. We will have 300 - 400 yachts and over 10,000 participants and will produce increased hotel room nights. Its host, NOSA, Inc. is a 501- C3 corporation a non -profit volunteer operation and has adopted the Newport Sea Base as its charity of choice. Numerous events offer the city great marketing /entertaining opportunities that include pre -race seminars, a launch fiesta, yacht person's luncheon, spectator yacht charters, VIP owner's reception and several opportunities for businesses to increase venues and showcase the city. 4. The funds from the city will enable NOSAto market the event and drive additional revenues to the hotels, restaurants and retail businesses of Newport Beach. Currently NOSA works very closely with Visit Newport in publicizing the race as well as producing the city s official "Welcome to Newport Beach launch Fiesta" at the Newport Beach Nautical Museum. 5. In order to hold a world class race event and host Mexican dignitaries, the annual budget exceeds $155,000. NOSA is requesting that that the city of Newport Beach once again support this longest running Newport Beach yachting tradition by becoming a presenting sponsor. Although the sponsorship investment is $40,000 (see attached), we realize that only 25% of the events operating budget can be requested. Therefore, we respectfully offer the city a reduced investment of $30,000 which will ensure city that the event is marketed, promoted and advertised in a highly professional manner.
