Chairman Dosh opened the public hearing with a
statement as to the purpose of this.propo ed ordi-
nance, noting that the.preservation of th charact
r
of the City of Newport. Beach was one of the _prime
reasons.for this proposed ordinance. He stressed
that the question before the Commission was one
of "height ", not "density ". Mr. Dosh also read
into the record a letter from the Newport.Heights
Association dated May 16, 1972,
Director of Community Development, Hogan addressed
the audience indicating on a colored map-the exist
ing height limits in the City. Before, going to a
second map showing the proposed changes, Mr,Hogan
reviewed the proposed ordinance step by step,
following which he indicated these changes on a
map which he noted had -been prepared as a result
of work done by the Mayor's Ad Hoc >High.Rise
Committee which consisted of three members of the
City Council, three members of:the Planning Commis
sion, citizen's. representatives, property owners
with substantial interests, and representatives of
the Chamber of Commerce. He stated further that
the map did not .reflect the unanimous opinion of
that Committee; that it reflected what could be
called a.reluctant consensus of.that- Committee.
