Yewport Beach Cit Planning Gonnission met in
regular session Au�ust 20, 19352 City Hall, 7:30
P. '',. Chairman Parks, Presiding.
Present: Parks, Dennison, Smith, F. W. Briggs, L.
Briggs, Hilmer, Tilton, Patterson and Fire
Chief Crocker.
Absent:

?Finutes: Reading of minutes dispensed with on
account of the absence of Mrs. Williams, our
secretary, who is ill. The Chairman appointed
L. Ti. Briggs to act as SecretGry, pro ten.
On account of theesance of three men represent-
ing the Union Oil Co., of California, the Chairman
suspended the regular order of business to hear

This company had made arplication some creeks ago
to the City Council for permission to extend the
pier, to construct a larger float, and to in-
crease the storage capacity and to construct
certain buildings at their marine. service station
on the south shore of Balboa Island between Agate
and Opal Streets. The council referred this to the
Fire Chief and the Planning Commission for a
report.
*qtr. Sullivan, the company's engineer, stated that
the plan contamplated the use of storage tanks to
be placed about half.' below grade, surrounded by
concrete walls and earth filled to cover the top
half of the tanks. The proposed building to be of
wood covered with corrugated iron. The total
storage at this planet would be 49,000 gallons
of which amount 25,000 gallons might be gasoline
and the balance diesel tails.
T ".e suggestion was made that plants of this characto
er, surrounded closely by residential areas,, might
be less objectionable if given good architectural
treatment and landscaping.
Ordinanca #4322 being interim ordinance: applying
to Balboa Island, was studied and M`r..Tilton
stated that this ordinance, if given liberal
interpretation, might not prevent the requested
improvements. for retail purposes; storage, and
wholesale use not, prosier eta.
Note: Dr. Hilmar later read from ordinance X432
to the affect that the purpose of the ordinance
was to maintain the status quo and not to permit
the enlargerent of existing norb -conforming uses.
Cornissionar Briggs stated that as an individual
meriber he did not arprove the storage; in this
location of so large an amount of fuel oils.
Ordinance #241, dated in 1923, was studied and

Mr. Tilton estimated that if he can find a good
man in this line of work available, the ordinance
can be ready for hearing within thirty days.
