HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/21/1936THE NEWPORT BEACH CITY PLANNING COMMISSION, scheduled !
to meet in regular session October 21st, were obliged
to disband after a series of informal discussions,
because of lack of quorum, until the regular adjourn-
ed meeting to be held November 4th, 1936.
Present: Mrs. Williams, E.B. Whitson,.F.W. Briggs.
Inspector Nelson and Consultant L. Deming
Tilton attended.
Absent: P.A. Palmer, Kenneth Baum, R.L. Patterson
and Roland Thompson.
The following was brought to the attention of the
Commission and informally discussed:
MR. B. PADWAY of Beverly Hills, new owner of the for-
mer Gillette property, Lots 1 and 2, Block P in Tract
518, is desirous of cutting that house in two, tbereby
making two separate and distinct residences, to be
remodeled and used by himself and his brother. The
side yard requirements prohibits him from remodeling
•the house as he wishes. He plans to make them strict
ly Mediterranian type homes, beautifully landscaped
with patios, etc., together with a steel and concrete
bulkhead. He does not plan to sell either house and
he stated emphatically that it was no promotion sehem
Pictures were shown the Commission of the proposed
improvements. It was the opinion of the Commission
that this request would not be denied him as it would
be an asset to the city in the way of attractive
treatment in that locality, but Mr. Padway was ad-
vised that the Planning Commission could act only in
the capacity of an advisory board and that the City
Council is the governing body. A Public Hearing
would have to be held, after which the Commission
would make its recommendation to the City Council.
Mr. Padway remarked in that case that in all probab-
ility he would discontinue his plans as the construe -
tion must take place immediately, if at all, as the
present wooden bulkhead was being washed away. He
will advise Mr. Parks as to his decision within a
few days.
• ROLAND VALLELY is desirous of changing the zoning of
his property at from residential to
business, as it is primarilly a business district.
A Public Hearing on this matter will be held November
4th. Mr. Vallely suggested that in the matter of
Public Hearings, cards should be mailed to all in-
.terested property owners, for the benefit of those
who live out of town. He was advised that this was
being done.
ROY SUMMERS asked for advice as to the closing off of
the alley in rear of Storey Building between Main St.
and "A" St., for the purpose of utilizing same for
private use. This alley is quite narrow and used
very infrequently for traffic. The Commission agreed
that it was deemed practical and that they would make
this recommendation to the City Council at its neat
meeting November 2nd.
F.W. BRIGGS, Commissiore r, suggested that the Board
give some thought to the matter of re- zoning property
between 9th and 10th Streets, The American Legion
had requested this change for the purpose of erecting
an auditorium for the use of the Legion and the pub-
lie. This petition was brought before the Council at
its last meeting and tabled until further develop-
ments of appropriation for the construction of this
•building. Mr. Whitson, new member of the Commission,
opined that it might be sometime before further steps
are taken by the American Legion, due to the fact that
they had not as yet received the necessary funds from
the Government.
A. M. NELSON, Building Inspector, asked several ques-
tions concerning the technalities in the Zoning Ordi-
nance. He was advised of same.
The Commission adjourned to )"ember 4th,,193-4.
