AMENDING SECTION 2601 OF e
THE MUNICIPAL CODE OF
THE CITY OF NEWPORT
BEACH, PROVIDING FOR (l

ED. VALUATION OF All
TAXABLE PROPERTY. WITH-
IN THE CITY OF NEWPORT
BEACH, THE PROCEEDS
THEREOF TO BE FOR THE
PROVIDING FOR AND MAIN-

LIBRARY OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH, AND
PROVIDING FOR THE FIX-
ING OF SAID LIBRARY TAX
RATE IN A LESSER AMOU]Y
BY ORDINANCE OF THE
CITY COUNCIL, AND ORDER-
ING THE SUBMISSION OF
SAID ORDINANCE TO THE a•
ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH AT THE
GENERAL MUNICIPAL
ELECTION TO BE HELD IN
SAID CITY OF NEWPORT
BEACH ON THE 13th DAY OF
APRIL, 1954.
The People of the City of New-
port Beach do ordain as follows: ___
SECTION 1: Section 2601 of
the Municipal Code of the City of
Newport Beach is hereby amend- s
-ad to read as follows: C
"Section 2601. Library Fund.[I
Pursuant to the assent of the ma r
jority of the qualified electors of 1
the City, voting at an election held
on the 13th day of April, 1954,
a tax in an amount to be deter-
mined by the City Council of the
City of Newport Beach by ordi-
nance, but in no event to exceed
the sum of 10¢ shall be levied in
each fiscal year upon each $100.00
of the assessed valuation of all
taxable property within the City
.for library purposes. Such tax
shall be in addition to all other
taxes which the City is authorized
tto levy. Such tax shall be collected
in the same manner and at the
same time as other municipal
taxes are collected, and the pro-
ceeds therefrom shall be paid into
the treasury of the City to the
credit of the "Library Fund" and
the money therefrom shall be ex-
pended for public library purposes
in providing for and maintaining
the public library and its branch -
es in the City."
SECTION 2: This Ordinance
shall not become effective until
the same shall have been submit-
ted to the electors of the. City of ;
Newport Beach at a general elec-
tion to be held• in the City of
Newport Beach on the 13th day of
April, 1954, and at said general
election there s h a 11 be and is
hereby submitted to the electors
of the City of Newport Beach,
this Ordinance, and the electors
of the City of ,Newport Beach
shall be, and they are hereby, in-
vited to vote for or against this
Ordinance, and the adoption there-
of; and the form in which this
said ordinance shall be submitted
to said electors as hereinbefore
provided for, shall be as follows:
"PROPOSITION No. 1
Shall Ordinance No. 710
of the City of Newport

Newport Beach, provid-
ing for the levy and
collection for the pur-
pose of providing and
maintaining the Public

10¢ per $100.00 by Or-
dinance of the City
Council in the discre-
tion of the City Council,
be adopted ?"
SECTION 3: If at said election
the majority of voters vote in
favor of this Ordinance, and if
upon canvassing the votes so
cast thereat, a majority of them
are found to be in favor of this
Ordinance, it shall become effect-
ive 10 days after the canvassing
of said votes so cast, and said
tax shall be- levied and collected
fop and used in the manner pro -,
vided for herein.
SECTION 4: The above and
foregoing ordinance shall be
published once in the Newport -
Balboa Press, a newspaper of
general circulation, printed, pub -
lished and circulated in the City
of Newport Beach, and upon said
publication and upon its being
voted in favor of by a majority
. of the votes cast at the election
as shown by the canvass of said
votes, and upon the expiration of
10 days from the canvass of said
votes, it shall take effect and be
in force.
The above and foregoing Ordi-
nance was passed at a regular
meeting of the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach held
on the 23rd day of February,
' 1954, by the affirmative vote of
the following members thereof,
to wit:
AYES, Councilmen: Smith,
Finch, Isbell, Bennett, Miller.
Noes, Codncibnen: None
ABSENT Councilmen: None
