AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH
AMENDING SECTIONS 12..56.140 AND 12.56.150 OF
THE NEWPORT BEACH MUNICIPAL CODE, AND ADDING
SECTIONS 12.56.160, 12.56.170 AND 12.56.180
TO THE NEWPORT BEACH MUNICIPAL CODE, PERTAINING
TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF BICYCLE LANES
The City Council of the City of Newport Beach does ordain
as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 12.56.140 of the Newport Beach
Municipal Code is amended to read:
"12.56.140 Operating Bicycle on Sidewalk. No person
shall operate or ride a bicycle, surrey cycle, pedicab, or
other wheeled device or conveyance used for transportation and
propelled by human power, upon any sidewalk in the City,
except that bicycles may be ridden on the south one -half of
the sidewalk located on Ocean Front between F Street and
McFadden Place and between the westerly line of the Ocean Front
Parking Lot and 36th.Street; and on the sidewalks located on the
westerly side of Jamboree Road from Eastbluff Drive (Ford Road)
to Bayside Drive, the westerly side of Dover Drive from Cliff
Drive to 495 feet northerly of the center line of Coast Highway,
the westerly side of Eastbluff Drive from the northerly Corona
del Mar High School driveway to Jamboree Road, and the southerly
side of Cliff Drive from Kings Place to Dover Drive. The fore-
going prohibition shall not apply to children's or invalids'
tricycles, wheelchairs or skateboards."
SECTION 2. Section 12.56.150 of the Newport Beach
Municipal Code is amended to read:
"12.56.150 Riding Regulations. The rider of a bicycle
upon a roadway shall ride as nearly as practicable within
five feet of the righthand curb or edge of the roadway, except:
1. When passing a standing or other vehicle;

2. When making a lefthand turn at an intersection;
3. When crossing the Santa Ana River at the Coast
' Highway Bridge, in which case the rider of a bicycle
shall walk his bicycle on the existing sidewalk
along the south edge of the roadway; no bicycle shall
be ridden on said Coast Highway Bridge;
4. When traveling in a properly designated bicycle lane."
SECTION 3. Section 12.56.160 is added to the Newport
Beach Municipal Code to read:
1112.56.160 Designation.of Bicycle Lanes. The specified
portions of the following streets are designated as bicycle
lanes and shall be marked and signed in an appropriate manner:
Southerly side of Cliff Drive from Kings Place to
Dover Drive.
Southerly side of Riverside Avenue - Cliff Drive from
Coast Highway to E1 Modena Avenue.
Ub&erly side of Eastbluff Drive from Back Bay Drive
to 200 feet northerly of Mar Vista Drive.
Southerly side of Vista del Sol from Vista del Oro to
Eastbluff Drive."
SECTION 4. Section 12.56.170 is added to the Newport
Beach Municipal Code to read:
"12.56.170 Obedience to Signs. When signs are erected
on any street or sidewalk giving notice that a portion of
that street or sidewalk has been designated as a bicycle lane,
no person shall drive, park, or operate any vehicle or any
bicycle or other wheeled device or conveyance in any manner
contrary to the directions posted on such signs."
SECTION 5. Section 12.56.180 is added to the Newport
Beach Municipal Code to read:
"12.56.180 Placement of Appropriate Signs. Whenever
this Code or any ordinance or resolution of the City designates

any portion
of a street or
sidewalk as
a bicycle lane, the
City Traffic
Engineer shall
place and
maintain signs giving

notice thereof, and no such regulation shall be effective
unless such signs are in place."
SECTION 6. This ordinance shall be published once in
the official newspaper of the City, and the same shall be effective
30 days after the date of its adoption.
This ordinance was introduced at a regular meeting of
the City Council of the City of Newport Beach held on the 10th day
of April , 1972, and was adopted on the 24th day of
April 1972, by the following vote, to wit:
